Yellow alert up for Visayas on June 16

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) raised a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on June 16, 2026 due to high demand and the unavailability of some major coal power plants.

In its 8 a.m. advisory, the yellow alert will take effect between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. as peak demand was estimated to reach 2,384 megawatts (MW) with an available supply of only 2,587 MW.

NGCP said that 24 plants were on forced outage and 12 were running on derated capacities, which meant 947.8MW were unavailable to the grid.

It said the yellow alert was raised due to the non-functioning Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW) and KEPCO SPC Power Corp. Unit 1 (100 MW) and high demand.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not often lead to power interruptions.
