NGCP issues yellow alert for Visayas grid on Wednesday

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Wednesday as major coal plants in the region remained unavailable, making it unable to meet the high demand for power supply.

Based on its 8 a.m. advisory, the yellow alert takes effect between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand was expected to reach 2,382 megawatts (MW) with available capacity at only 2,552 MW.

NGCP said that 28 plants were on forced outage, while 9 plants were running on derated capacities, making 985.50 MW unavailable.

NGCP said the yellow alert was issued due to the continued unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants, namely Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), KEPCO SPC Power Corp. Unit 2(103 MW), Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW) and the high power demand.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not necessarily lead to power interruptions.
