Palace recognizes leadership change in Senate

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Wednesday said it recognized the Senate’s “new majority” that paved the way for Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian being named as the new Senate President pro tempore.

“What happened in the Senate this afternoon was in accordance with the law and the rule of law,” Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said in Filipino.

“The Palace recognizes and respects the decision of the new majority and the leadership of acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian,” she added.

The development came after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier in the day called on the senators to “get back to work” as the impasse in the chamber “is now in disarray”.
