Our world revolved around cartoons in the 1980s and early 1990s, which is why we often mention one name with a kind of childlike excitement reserved for a few — He-Man, the “most powerful man in the universe”. Superhero He-Man is returning to the big screen in Masters of the Universe, a movie that has taken a really long time to reach us. And if that is not enough, we have Nicholas Galitzine playing He-Man. No wonder generations of fans, young and old, cannot wait to watch it.
Masters of the Universe is one of the most anticipated movies of 2026. To many around the world, it marks the return of a favourite childhood hero who may have almost disappeared from the screens but never left the memories. Such peak nostalgia is understandable; after all, few superheroes are like He-Man. No offence meant to fans of Marvel superheroes, but He-Man is far more interesting as a character than much of the pantheon of the costumed heroes in the MCU’s club.
Mattel created He-Man as part of a line of toys. An early 1980s animation series based on the toy line instantly propelled He-Man to worldwide popularity. Many other adaptations followed, but none were as successful as the original animated series. Masters of the Universe is the movie that can make He-Man regain the place he deserves to occupy on the big screen. The film brings back several familiar themes, characters, one-liners and props, including the weapons, Castle Grayskull and Skeletor. And there are many more reasons for us to be excited about the movie, which releases on 5 June.
But before we list the reasons why we are already making that dramatic “I have the power” cry, let’s take a quick look at a few details about Masters of the Universe.
He-Man movie, Masters of the Universe, plot explained

The story begins with 10-year-old Prince Adam crash-landing on Earth, separated from the mystical Sword of Power. He tracks his sword down 15 years later and is transported back to Eternia, only to find it devastated under Skeletor’s tyrannical rule.
Adam subsequently joins forces with Teela, Man-At-Arms and the Sorceress to protect his world. In the process, he uncovers the truth about his past and his destiny as He-Man.

Directed by Travis Knight, Masters of the Universe brings together some of the most famous names in Hollywood. The cast includes:
Nicholas Galitzine as Adam Glenn / He-Man
Camila Mendes as Teela
Jared Leto as Skeletor
Idris Elba as Duncan / Man-At-Arms

Knight has earned a name for himself as a director. His films, Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) and Bumblebee (2018), were received very well by critics and fans. Masters of the Universe is his third as a filmmaker. And with that…
Here are the reasons behind our excitement for Masters of the Universe
It escaped a long period of development hell
Masters of the Universe has already spent close to two decades in development hell. Both Sony Pictures Entertainment and Netflix tried to make a movie on He-Man. Noah Centino and Kyle Allen were previously attached to play the superhero. Nothing came out of the efforts, which started sometime in 2009. So, the release of the upcoming He-Man movie is in itself a cause for celebration.
It reminds us of the epic animated series
Mattel created He-Man as a toy, but the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983–1985) immortalised the character. The series, tied to the childhood of millions around the world, has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 100 per cent. Everything about the cartoon – theme music, animation, voices and action – lives rent-free in our heads to this day. If Masters of the Universe replicates even half of what the cartoon show achieved, it will be enough to make the live-action film a major box office success.
It’s fantasy meets sci-fi meets sword-and-sorcery
The world of He-Man offers a rare combo of fantasy, sci-fi and sword-and-sorcery genres. Not many movies or TV shows can boast of such a unique genre blending. It is perfection from a fan’s POV. Think of someone merging the universes of Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian and The Lord of the Rings. That’s Masters of the Universe. Moreover, Prince Adam’s tale seems to have found the point where comedy, action, mystery, thrill and drama intersect. Though many have attempted such a combo, He-Man’s story is the one that has stood the test of time.
Visual effects
Of course, Masters of the Universe boasts of excellent visual effects thanks to the involvement of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). The movie’s trailer is proof that Amazon MGM Studios is leaving no stone unturned to make it a joyride for fans, both young and old. Visual effects are crucial to He-Man’s universe because it has mythical castles, alien landscapes and fantastical characters. One of the most interesting scenes to keep the eyes open is Prince Adam’s transformation to He-Man, as he raises the sword and says the magic words: “By the power of Grayskull”. There is a flash of it in the trailer, and it looks promising. This is a film tailor-made for modern CGI and IMAX-scale action.
Oh, this iconic supervillain!

Skeletor is one of the greatest villains in the superhero genre. He is a skull-faced, blue-skinned sorcerer who intends to rule Eternia by capturing the kingdom ruled by Adam’s father, King Randor. With numerous evil powers by his side, Skeletor’s biggest desire is to capture the magical Castle Grayskull, learn its secrets and seize the Sword of Power from He-Man. His weapon of choice is the Havoc Staff, and he is also a master of dark arts. There cannot be a He-Man without Skeletor, and there is no Skeletor without He-Man. We hope Leto does justice to the character, immortalised in the first animation series by the timeless voice of Alan Oppenheimer.
Here’s a chance to avenge the 1987 movie’s debacle
The wait for a live-action He-Man movie has been excruciatingly long since Dolph Lundgren’s 1987 version, also titled Masters of the Universe, tanked at the box office. Though hailed as a cult film today, its poor reception almost ended the future of the superhero toy line. As die-hard fans, we want the new Masters of the Universe to enjoy a monumental global run at the counter and win the hearts of critics and fans around the world.
Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man has our heart
Of course, what is Masters of the Universe without He-Man? And who better to play the iconic superhero than Gen-Z heartthrob Nicholas Galitzine? The handsome actor has been on a ‘heart-winning mission’ since making his debut in The Beat Beneath My Feet (2014). He has been particularly unstoppable since Cinderella (2021), delivering hits such as Purple Hearts (2022), Red, White & Royal Blue (2023) and The Idea of You (2024). Galitzine’s wielding of the Sword of Power in Masters of the Universe is like the coming together of two generations of fans.
There’s a strong franchise possibility
There is a massive opportunity for a He-Man franchise led by Galitzine as the superhero. If the movie does well, which we hope it does, it can be said with certainty that Amazon MGM will churn out follow-ups. Does this mean we will see Princess Adora, Prince Adam’s twin sister, who transforms into the powerful She-Ra using her Sword of Protection? Most likely.
Will He-Man officially embrace his gay icon status?
This is one of the biggest reasons why we are particularly looking forward to the film. He-Man has long been perceived as an LGBTQ icon. In fact, queer interpretations of the character have been around since Mattel created the toy line. It is widely held that Prince Adam is a closeted gay man, and his transformation into He-Man symbolises his coming out. Despite the conversations around the character, only the 1987 movie came closest to a confirmation. Will Galitzine’s He-Man be the first to embrace his sexuality openly? If he does, we will cheer the loudest.
