KUALA LUMPUR - Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stands by his decision to resign from his position as a minister and depart from the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) ministry.
The Setiawangsa MP stated that his decision was made based on a larger consideration, which is for the sake of the party's mandate and broader reforms.
"Last week, Puan Shareen Abdul Ghani, the Chairman of one of the Ministry's agencies, MGTC (Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation), visited my office at NRES. I was in the office packing up.
"She asked if there was still a chance for us to convince YB to change your mind?" I just smiled and looked around the office.
"I said that it is not easy to leave NRES. After two years, I consider the team at NRES, the departments, and agencies to have reached the 'dream team' level - with exceptional commitment, ability, and credibility.
"But the decision I made is for a larger consideration. The party's mandate is important for broad reforms.
"Indeed, I have the option to stay, but my choice is to resign," he said in a Facebook post today.
He also used the analogy of Jurgen Klopp when announcing his resignation as manager of Liverpool Football Club, which Nik Nazmi described as reflecting his feelings.
"When Jurgen Klopp announced his resignation as Liverpool manager, he said:
"I love absolutely everything about this club… I love the staff… But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take."
"That's how I feel," he said.
In addition, Nik Nazmi also hopes that MGTC will continue to lead the implementation of the climate change agenda towards the Net Zero 2050 goal.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, expressed hope that Nik Nazmi could continue his duties as Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability.
Anwar said he gave the Setiawangsa MP time and opportunity to think about staying on in the position.
He also congratulated Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who served very well as Economic Minister.
Earlier, the Prime Minister had given the two ministers who resigned time to think carefully before relinquishing their positions in the Cabinet.
Anwar said that if possible, he wanted Rafizi and Nik Nazmi to rejoin his Cabinet.
