No choice for new AFP chief yet – Palace

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is yet to receive a list of candidates for the possible successor of Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., the soon-to-retire Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff.

Brawner will wrap up his military service on July 10.

“As of now, nothing has been relayed to us yet,” Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said in Filipino in a press briefing.

Although a short list has yet to be submitted, the Commander-in-Chief would want the next military chief to be “trustworthy, patriotic, God-fearing, and hardworking” as well as someone “with the welfare of the nation at heart.”

Among those possibly up for consideration are Acting AFP Vice Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Rommel Roldan, Philippine Army chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete, Philippine Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Arthure Cordura, and Philippine Navy chief Vice Adm. Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta.

A product of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Makatao” Class of 1989, Brawner was named the 60th AFP chief in July 2023.
