No information yet on Rafizi’s cabinet position - Fahmi

THERE is no information yet regarding Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli’s position as Minister of Economy following his defeat in the race for the PKR deputy presidency, said Minister of Communications and government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Speaking at a media event for Google’s Project Sigma: Engaging Malaysian Gen Z for News, Fahmi said he had yet to receive any official information on the matter.

“I have no further updates at this time, so we need to wait,” he said when asked whether Rafizi would remain in the Cabinet.

“ASEAN is still ongoing. Today is the second day of the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit,” he added, referring to the high-level diplomatic meetings taking place in Kuala Lumpur.

Rafizi had previously stated his intention to resign from Cabinet should he lose the PKR deputy presidency; a post he failed to retain after being defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar in the party elections on 23 May.

Earlier, amid ongoing speculation about his possible resignation from Cabinet following the recent Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leadership contest, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli appeared composed and fully engaged in his official duties at the 46th ASEAN Summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Tuesday.

Rafizi was seen participating in the 16th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit, which commenced at 8am. He joined the Malaysian delegation led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Upon arrival, Rafizi was observed shaking hands with Anwar and other ASEAN delegates.

Among the other leaders present were Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The leaders took a group photograph ahead of the summit’s opening, where Anwar stood beside Marcos and Prabowo, while Rafizi was positioned next to ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn.

Following the photo session, Marcos delivered the opening address before the summit proceeded into a closed-door session.

The second day of the ASEAN Summit will also feature the second ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit. - May 27, 2025
