Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, chairman of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, has firmly defended his recent comments regarding the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong, asserting that his statements were based on factual information rather than intended to insult the monarchy. This comes in response to a wave of police reports and criticism triggered by his remarks during a campaign event in Nenggiri.
In a press statement released today, Muhyiddin addressed the concerns raised by his critics following his comments about Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. He stated that his assertion regarding his support from 115 federal lawmakers post the 15th general election was accurate and not meant to demean the royal institution. Muhyiddin emphasized that his remarks were grounded in truth and not aimed at mocking the monarchy or inciting discord.
“I want to clarify that my statement during the Nenggiri campaign was based on factual information and was not intended to insult or challenge the monarchy,” Muhyiddin said. He reassured the public that he would cooperate fully with the ongoing police investigations to provide clarity on the issue.
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced online showing Muhyiddin addressing a crowd, where he discussed his post-election parliamentary support and questioned why he was not given the opportunity to form the government. He also mentioned the identity of the Agong at that time, a comment which has since drawn significant backlash.
Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional coalition, which secured 74 seats in the last general election, did not achieve a majority, leading to a complex political scenario. Following the election, Al-Sultan Abdullah appointed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the Prime Minister, who managed to assemble a unity coalition from various Malaysian parties, excluding PN.
The remarks have not only sparked controversy but also prompted several high-profile responses. Today, Pahang Crown Prince Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah condemned Muhyiddin’s comments as derogatory towards his father and called for stringent legal action. This statement was echoed by Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman, who confirmed that 28 police reports had been filed against Muhyiddin in connection with his remarks.
As the investigation progresses, Muhyiddin’s stance remains clear: he maintains that his statements were purely factual and insists that they did not breach any laws or legal boundaries. The political and legal ramifications of this controversy will likely continue to unfold, reflecting the intense and often contentious nature of Malaysia’s political landscape.
