In a bold statement today, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim vowed to put an end to political meddling in the judiciary, marking a new chapter in the nation’s governance. Speaking at the 37th LawAsia Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar declared that the days of government interference in the judicial system are over, signaling his administration's commitment to uphold the rule of law.
Anwar emphasized that political interference in Malaysia's judiciary had tarnished the integrity of the justice system in the past, with corrupt practices compromising judicial independence. “In the past, we have witnessed how political leaders, working hand-in-hand with key figures in the judiciary, undermined the judicial process for their own malicious and self-serving agendas," Anwar said, adding, "But today, I stand before you to firmly declare: enough is enough."
The prime minister’s remarks come at a pivotal time as Malaysia continues to grapple with the legacy of past governance scandals, many of which have raised concerns about the erosion of democratic principles and the rule of law. Anwar stressed that his government would no longer tolerate such violations of justice. "The independence of the judiciary is sacrosanct," he asserted, adding that his administration is committed to ensuring that justice is administered without fear or favor.
While acknowledging that he had been a vocal critic of the judiciary in the past, Anwar clarified that his criticism had always been aimed at upholding the independence of the institution. "I have been critical, yes, but never against the principle of an independent judiciary. It is a pillar of justice and essential to a functioning democracy," he remarked.
Anwar also used the occasion to emphasize that his government will not be swayed by pressure from powerful elites or interest groups. He pledged that his administration’s reforms would continue to move forward, even if they face resistance from those who seek to protect their privileged positions. “We will not allow the elite to derail reforms that are in the best interest of the people,” he said.
Highlighting the firm stance his administration has taken on issues like subsidies and financial reforms, Anwar mentioned the recent decision to end the blanket diesel subsidy as an example of his government's willingness to make tough decisions. "Previous governments paid lip service to reform, fearing unpopularity. But we walked the talk, demonstrating the political courage to act in line with moral principles, even if those actions may be unpopular," Anwar said.
Earlier this week, Anwar had also spoken to investors about his government’s financial reforms, signaling that his administration had resolved many of the economic challenges that had plagued previous governments. He assured both domestic and international stakeholders that his leadership was rooted in accountability and transparency.
