KOTA BHARU – Pas does not need to include a ban on gambling in its manifesto as the party’s position is already clearly enshrined in its policies and constitution.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the Islamic principles championed by Pas clearly reject gambling as part of efforts to establish Islamic values in the country.
“Pas’ policy is Islam, Pas’ call is Allahuakhbar, and in Islam itself, gambling is not allowed.
“It is already stated in the Pas Constitution, Clause 5. There is no need to wait for the manifesto,” he told reporters after appearing on the Anak Muda Podcast in conjunction with the 72nd Pas Muktamar at the Kelantan Islamic Education Centre in Pengkalan Chepa here on Thursday.
He said this when asked to comment on a video recording of Perlis Mufti Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, who challenged Pas to include bans on gambling and alcohol in the party’s election manifesto.
In a related development, Muhammad Sanusi said the Kedah state government was now awaiting the next legal step following the possibility that gambling premise operators may file claims for compensation in court.
“They want to take the case to court to seek compensation, so we will fight it,” he said.
At the same time, Muhammad Sanusi hoped that society would no longer view gambling as a means of making a profit or rely on luck.
“Whether they are from Kedah or anywhere else, people should not rely on luck by gambling,” he said.
