No need to change business model to sell RM5 Menu Rahmah meals: Salahuddin

KUALA LUMPUR – Any food operator can participate in the Menu Rahmah programme to offer RM5 meals without having to change their business model, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said.

In urging more food and beverage operators to join the programme, he said they do not have to adjust their items or prices.

“Sell what you are already selling. The business model is the same. Don’t reduce portion size or reduce the quality or taste.

“Just set aside for RM5, a serving of rice, chicken or fish, and some vegetables. As for your other items, you can sell them at market price and continue your business model,” Salahuddin said in a video to promote the cheap meals programme.

Salahuddin launched the Menu Rahmah programme on January 31. It is an initiative led by private entrepreneurs and does not involve government funds.

A full meal of protein, vegetables and rice with a drink costs only RM5 and is available at 15,000 participating eateries nationwide. These eateries comprise some 12,000 mamak restaurants, 800 Indian restaurants, 500 Kuala Lumpur-based tom yam shops, and all Mydin outlets.

The programme is being expanded to Sabah and Sarawak. The higher education minister has also said the RM5 meals will be made available in public university campuses. – The Vibes, February 4, 2023
