SANDAKAN: Karamunting Assemblyman George Hiew reminded residents here not to conduct open burning especially during the current hot and dry weather to avoid grass and forest fires here.

His call follows the forest fire case near Jalan Cecily, in Kam Mit Yen Park and Hin Ann Sandakan cemetery on Saturday and Sunday.

George said the fire that spread on Saturday was successfully put out by the fire department, but the incident happened again on Sunday at around 10 am in the same area, believed to be due to the hot weather.

He said that apart from the illegal open burning of garbage, residents who clean graves in conjunction with the Qingming festival should also be more vigilant and make sure that all fires have been extinguished before leaving.

“I understand that those who celebrate the Qingming festival will clean the graves and burn paper offerings for their family members who have passed away, according to Buddhist beliefs.

“However, I hope they will be more careful and ensure that all the burnt materials are no longer on fire, and put out the fire with water on the burnt grass to prevent the fire from spreading in the surrounding area,” he stressed.

George had reviewed the condition of the forest fire area on Sunday morning, and provided drinking water to the firefighters.

“I would like to thank the Sandakan firemen for their swift action and I greatly appreciate their efforts to ensure the safety of the people of Karamunting,” he added.
