The results of the Pathankot Municipal Corporation elections were mired in controversy following a dispute over the counting of votes in Ward No. 47.

Earlier, election officials had announced that the BJP secured 22 seats, while the Congress won 18 and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) bagged 10 seats in the 50-member municipal corporation house.

However, the official declaration of the final results was halted after authorities ordered a recounting of votes in Ward No. 47 amid objections raised during the counting process.

Pathankot BJP MLA Ashwani Sharma remained present at the counting centre during the developments. Cabinet Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak also attempted to enter the counting venue, but rival party supporters allegedly prevented him from doing so.

If the earlier trends and results remain unchanged after the recounting process, no party would be able to cross the halfway mark of 26 seats required for a clear majority in the municipal corporation.

Officials said the final official results would be declared only after the arrival of Deputy Commissioner Pallavi.
