KOTA KINABALU – Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh will not be remanded here but he will be released as soon as his statement is recorded, said Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun.
Jauteh said the Merlimau assemblyman was detained following an investigation that was launched by the police on two reports lodged regarding the latter’s statements and actions over the KK Mart socks controversy.
The case is investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Multimedia Communication Act 1998.
Jauteh said Akmal’s statement was still being recorded as of noon today, reported Malay Mail online.
Earlier, Akmal announced his arrest on Facebook, saying he would not budge from his stance over the “Allah”-printed socks issue.
He also said he was scheduled to have his statement recorded at Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
“Insya-Allah, I will give my full cooperation. Please pray that everything will be alright.”
A video depicting his arrest at Kota Kinabalu International Airport has been shared on social media since this morning. In the video, Akmal was captured saying, “No fear, no surrender,” while smiling at the camera from inside a police vehicle.
It was learned that Akmal flew to Kota Kinabalu this morning to attend a Kembara Ramadhan programme in the state, with Sabah Umno Youth members. – April 5, 2024
