Political analyst Prof Dr Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmood from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) said he doesn't see any good contenders to challenge and replace Zahid as Umno president.
He also named a few Umno leaders who could potentially go against Zahid for the presidency post.
“I can't really see a good contender. It could be Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri, Datuk Seri Hishamuddin or Khairy Jamaluddin but other than those three.
"I don't see Datuk Seri Mohd Hassan, for instance going against Zahid,” he told Sinar Daily.
Echoing similar sentiment, analyst Merdeka Centre political analyst Ibrahim Suffian also stated that it is still unclear who could go against Zahid.
Ibrahim said there are rumours that Hishamuddin could have a chance to against Zahid but at this point, it is still ambiguous.
“Some rumours have been afloat about the possibility of Hishamuddin (as a contender) but it is not clear at this point.
“Additionally, there is a likelihood that the AGM may pass a resolution not to have contests for the top two posts of the party and this will then preserve Zahid’s position and lend stability to the unity government.
The Umno AGM had been rescheduled for Jan 11-14, the party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan announced through Twitter on Dec 5.
Originally, the general assembly was scheduled for Dec 21-24.
