THE Malaysian Marine Department (JLM) has confirmed that the explosion and fire that broke out aboard the Malta-registered container vessel KYPARISSIA at Tanjung Pelepas Port (PTP) yesterday did not result in any release of dangerous or toxic gases.

In a statement issued today, JLM said preliminary investigations indicated that the fire originated from one of the containers while the ship was en route from PTP to Lome, Togo.

“Following the incident, the vessel returned to PTP (Berth 4) to seek emergency assistance and undergo further inspection,” the department said.

The tragedy claimed the lives of three individuals, while three others sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

PTP authorities confirmed that the affected area was fully secured and that all entry and exit routes to the berth, including the main gate and operational zones, were closed for safety purposes.

JLM added that an investigation team has been established to determine the exact cause of the incident, working closely with relevant agencies and the ship’s agent.

“The JLM Oil Spill Response Team is also on standby should their assistance be required.

“The public is advised not to speculate and to rely only on official information issued by the authorities to avoid the spread of inaccurate reports.

“JLM extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims,” the statement read. - November 8, 2025
