A MAGNITUDE 5.2 earthquake struck the Minahassa Peninsula in Sulawesi, Indonesia, this afternoon, but posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).
METMalaysia said the earthquake occurred at 3.31pm at a depth of 10 kilometres, at coordinates 0.8 degrees South and 122.7 degrees East.
The epicentre was about 150 kilometres south of Gorontalo, Indonesia.
“According to the initial assessment by METMalaysia, there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” the department said in a statement.
Separately, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the earthquake at magnitude 5.3 at 2.31pm local time, placing its epicentre about 26 kilometres southwest of Pulau Pua, Central Sulawesi, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties following the earthquake. - September 21, 2026
