Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) refuted remarks by Umno Sabah election Director Datuk Jeffery Nor, that belittled and misrepresented LDP’s role and contributions in Sabah politics.

“Although LDP currently does not have any elected representative, we have never stopped raising our voice for Sabah.

“Be it the issue of the 40pc tax revenue return, state autonomy or development matters, we have always been at the forefront, fighting to secure Sabah’s rightful interests.

“Our political struggle is not for short-term electoral gain but for the long-term development and well-being of the people of Sabah,” said LDP Youth chief Loong Kok Seng in a statement here on Tuesday.

He was commenting on a statement by Jeffery who said LDP President Datuk Chin Su Phin should reflect on his party’s own fate before commenting on the strength of other parties.

Loong said it cannot be denied that Umno’s influence in Sabah has declined sharply, having lost most of its seats and the trust of the people.

“It now survives because of political cooperation with other parties,” he said.

Loong said that in a democratic system, every political party has the right to comment and critique others, which is a fundamental principle of democracy.

“We are not a party that only appears during elections; we work day after day, year after year, serving and fighting for the people of Sabah,” he said.

“LDP will continue to honour its commitments and prove through actions our love and responsibility for Sabah,” he said.
