Seen those posts saying you could be fined up to RM20,000 for not updating your MyKad address after moving? Well, the National Registration Department (NRD) has put those worries to rest.
The department says it isn’t carrying out any special campaign or enforcement action against people who haven’t updated the residential address on their MyKad.
The clarification comes after claims spread on social media saying anyone who failed to update their address within 90 days of moving could face a fine of up to RM20,000, up to three years in prison, or both.
In a statement posted on its official social media pages, NRD said the claims do not reflect the actual situation and have caused unnecessary confusion.
The department said MyKad holders are still responsible for keeping their personal information up to date. If you’ve permanently moved to a new address, you’re encouraged to visit an NRD office to update it. Replacing a MyKad with the new address costs RM10.
NRD also reminded the public to verify information through official sources instead of relying on incomplete or misleading social media posts.
