PETALING JAYA: The Northeast Monsoon, which began yesterday, is expected to continue until March 2027, with Malaysians urged to remain alert to potential flooding, rough seas and extreme heat.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain were forecast between November 2026 and January 2027.
He said the downpours could trigger flooding in low-lying areas and locations near rivers, as well as rough seas and rising sea levels in the South China Sea.
“As the monsoon progresses from January to March 2027, rainfall is expected to decrease significantly, particularly in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.
“This transition will bring hotter and drier conditions, with the potential for more severe heatwaves due to the strong El Niño phenomenon affecting the region,” he said in a statement.
Arthur urged the public to remain prepared, prioritise safety and stay alert to changing weather conditions throughout the 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon season.
He also advised Malaysians to obtain accurate and updated weather forecasts, advisories and warnings from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) through its official website at www.met.gov.my, the myCuaca mobile application, its official social media channels or the hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
