Concerns are being raised about the health of Norway’s Queen Sonja after the 88-year-old cancelled her engagements on Monday due to arrhythmia, according to the NTB news agency.
The wife of Norway’s King Harald V was originally due to attend an audience and a lunch with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, only her husband and Crown Prince Haakon showed up.
The royal court said, as cited by NTB, that only her schedule for Monday had been cancelled for now, and that her next engagement is planned for next week.
Sonja was hospitalized in early 2025 after suffering atrial fibrillation, the most common form of arrhythmia, following a skiing trip. She was subsequently fitted with a pacemaker.
Her husband, the 89-year-old king, has also faced recurring health problems and has undergone heart surgery. Last week, Harald's elder sister, Princess Astrid, 94, was fitted with a temporary pacemaker.
Another Norwegian royal, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, suffers from pulmonary fibrosis, a serious lung condition. The 52-year-old's health is said to have recently deteriorated.
Mette-Marit's son, Marius Borg Høiby, is currently awaiting a verdict in a lengthy trial centred on the alleged abuse of women, including rape, that concluded in March. A ruling is expected on June 15.
