The son of Norway's crown princess, Marius Borg Høiby, must serve the remainder of his pre-trial detention in behind bars.
The newspaper Nettavisen reported on Wednesday that Norway’s highest court rejected the 29-year-old’s appeal against a ruling denying him permission to await sentencing at home under electronic monitoring.
The verdict in the trial is expected on June 15.
Høiby, who is charged with a range of serious offences including rape, had wanted to spend the time until then in his flat in Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit's residence.
Høiby has been in custody since the trial began in early February. A previous request for release had already been rejected by the court because of “the seriousness and scope of the case as well as the high risk of reoffending.”
The trial of the 29-year-old concluded at the end of March. Høiby faces 40 charges. Half of them relate to Høiby’s behaviour towards a young woman with whom he had been in a relationship since 2023.
He admitted to having become violent towards his then-girlfriend whilst under the influence of alcohol and cocaine and to having destroyed items in her flat.
Høiby is also accused of four counts of rape. He is accused of filming the alleged victims during the incidents.
Høiby, who is the son of Mette-Marit from a relationship before her 2001 marriage to the crown prince, has consistently denied the rape allegations.
The prosecutors sought a sentence of seven years and seven months’ imprisonment. Høiby’s defence lawyers, however, argued for a prison sentence of one and a half years. His lawyers contended that he should be acquitted of the rape charges.
