KUALA KUBU BAHARU – The unity government's candidate for the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, DAP's Pang Sock Tao, is confident in her ability to defend the party's stronghold despite not being a local.
On her second day of campaigning, Pang said she already received a favourable response from the local Malay community.
“When I visited the markets in Batang Kali earlier, where there were many local Malays, I received a warm welcome.
"They offered their support and good wishes, which greatly encouraged me.
“With this backing, I am confident in my ability to retain Kuala Kubu Baharu," she said during a press conference at DAP’s Kuala Kubu Baharu community service centre today.
Although not originally from Kuala Kubu Baharu, Pang said she is no stranger to the constituency.
On top of being from Selangor, Pang said she often accompanied the late Lee Kee Hiong in her work when she was the representative for Kuala Kubu Baharu.
Pang also explained that despite holding an engineering degree, she ventured into politics intending to reshape the political landscape.
“Many perceive politics as tainted, mired in conflict, and divisive.
“But with the experience of working under two ministries, politics is one of the most straightforward methods to bring change to the lives of locals," she said.
However, Pang anticipates a low turnout rate being the primary challenge leading up to polling day and encouraged voters to exercise their rights to cast their ballots.
The late Lee held the Kuala Kubu Baharu seat for DAP since 2013 and was praised for her services to the constituency during her tenure.
The seat was vacated following her death last month due to ovarian cancer.
The poll on May 11 will see a four-cornered fight between Pang (Pakatan Harapan), Khairul Azhari Saut (Perikatan Nasional), Hafizah Zainudin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia), and Nyau Ke Xin (independent). – April 28, 2024
