Former Wimbledon champion Michael Stich has voiced scepticism about Serena Williams’ comeback at the grass Grand Slam tournament in London.
The 23-time major singles champion has come out of retirement aged 44 to play singles and doubles at the London classic, which starts on Monday.
"She has an unbelievable career, that is beyond question. But why does she have to come back and play again? I can't make sense of it in my head," 1991 men's singles winner Stich told an Amazon Prime media round on Friday.
After four years away as a mother of two children, US star Williams has taken a wild card at Wimbledon and German Stich thinks that is unfair.
"I think for the other players it is nothing positive because attention is being taken away from them by a player who is outstanding but who does not have the slightest chance of winning Wimbledon," the 57-year-old said.
The long-time world number one has been drawn against 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint. Williams is also playing doubles with her sister Venus.
