New York City has outlined a major traffic plan for the 2026 World Cup, with Midtown Manhattan set to face extra restrictions around local match days.
The New York New Jersey host region will stage eight World Cup matches, including the final. Although the games will be played at MetLife Stadium, Manhattan will still be central to fan movement.
Supporters are expected to move through hotels, bars, watch parties, Penn Station, and other major transport points before and after games.
What NYC’s World Cup traffic plan includes
The city has listed the local match dates as Gridlock Alert Days. Those dates are June 13, June 16, June 22, June 25, June 27, June 30, July 5, and July 19.
The plan includes a 42nd Street bus corridor, car-free areas near Penn Station, and limits on truck deliveries across part of Midtown.
Delivery restrictions are expected to cover 30th Street to 60th Street. They will apply for six hours before each match and three hours after each match.
Why Midtown businesses are concerned
The main concern for businesses is timing. Restaurants and bars may need to adjust deliveries, staffing, stock planning, and service windows during a period when fan traffic could be higher.
Rail travel through Penn Station will also be a major part of the match-day plan, with movement toward Secaucus Junction tied to access for World Cup ticket holders.
The World Cup will bring a rare global spotlight to the region. The practical challenge for NYC is making sure residents, visitors, transport users, and local businesses understand the rules before the first match day arrives.
