‘Ocean Thunder’ arrives in M’sia through Strait of Hormuz, carrying 1 million barrels of crude oil

The vessel Ocean Thunder has arrived in Malaysia carrying one million barrels of crude oil from Basrah, Iraq. This is part of a broader supply network, one of PETRONAS’ efforts to ensure the country’s fuel supply remains stable.

Ocean Thunder arrives in M’sia through Strait of Hormuz

1 million barrels of crude oil can produce approximately:

• Diesel: 62-64 million litres 
• Petrol: 45-48 million litres
• Jet fuel: 22-24 million litres 
• LPG: 5-6 million litres 
• Others: 18- 25 million litres 

And the refining period for the crude oil would take roughly 6 days.

On average, Malaysians use up to:

• Diesel: 34 million litres 
• Petrol: 46 million litres 
• Jet fuel: 12 million litres 
• LPG: 20 million litres

That’s ~112 million litres of fossil fuel per day

Ocean Thunder only carries approximately 38% of imported crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz. Along with their broad supply network, PETRONAS revealed that they’re able to ensure enough oil supply at their stations until the end of June 2026.
