JOHOR BAHRU – Dr Maszlee Malik has staged a political comeback after winning the Puteri Wangsa seat in the Johor state election, marking a return to elected office and reviving his standing after a turbulent period in national politics.

Maszlee won with a majority of 5,738 votes.

Maszlee polled 41,694 votes against MCA's Teow Chia Ling (35,956), Muda’s  Rashifa Aljuneid (5,821 votes), Bersama’s Nicholas Paul Vincent who secured (2,389 votes) and Independent Wang Wee Szong (238 votes).

The victory marks a significant turnaround for the former education minister, whose political journey has been shaped by a rapid rise after the 2018 general election, a controversial Cabinet tenure and subsequent efforts to rebuild his political relevance.

The win is likely to strengthen Maszlee’s position within Pakatan Harapan and reinforce his status as one of the coalition’s more recognisable figures.

It also signals that voters were willing to look beyond past controversies and judge him on his current political offering, local engagement and ability to represent their interests.

For Maszlee, the victory provides an opportunity to begin a new chapter in his political career and demonstrate that his appeal extends beyond his previous role as a federal minister.
