Two mechanics, including a disabled man, have pleaded not guilty at the Kulai Magistrate’s Court to reckless driving charges on the Linkedua Highway.
KULAI: Two mechanics including a disabled man (OKU) were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with reckless driving and endangering road users on Linkedua Highway, last Saturday.
Muhamad Aiman Izuddin Sukri, 25, and Mohamad Riduan Abd Ghani, 26, each pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out before Magistrate R. Salini.
According to the charge sheet, the two were charged with committing the offence while riding Yamaha motorcycles on the Linkedua Highway at about 7 am on August 22.
The charge was brought under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides for a jail sentence of up to five years and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000, if convicted.
Offenders may also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least five years from the date of conviction.
However, lawyer Abd Rahim Ali representing Muhamad Aiman requested a lower bail as his client is a disabled person who works as a mechanic in Sentul and lives in a workshop.
Lawyer R.S. Amarpreet Singh representing Mohamad Riduan informed that his client earns RM1,500 a month, is married to an unemployed wife and has a father who is diabetic.
The court then allowed both accused to be bailed at RM5,000 each with one surety and set Oct 5 for mention of the case and submission of documents.
Previously, the police had reportedly arrested 11 men including a motoring influencer to assist in the investigation into the case of blocking the road to conduct illegal racing on the highway which had also gone viral on social media.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad reportedly said a group of individuals were believed to have blocked the road from kilometre 33 of the Senai North Toll exit to kilometre 31, the Johor Premium Outlet (JPO) exit in Linkedua for racing.
Meanwhile, Kulai district police chief ACP Tan Seng Lee said nine other individuals who were previously remanded were released on police bail today and yesterday.
