SHAH ALAM – The Johor State Election (Johor polls) is not only seeing intense competition involving 172 candidates vying for 56 state seats, but is also drawing attention for the stark age gap between its oldest and youngest candidates.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Lim Chin Eng, 73, who is contesting the Stulang seat, has emerged as the oldest candidate in this election, while Danish Hossman Abd Rahman, 23, from Pakatan Harapan (PH), who is contesting the Johor Lama seat, is the youngest.
The fifty-year age gap between the two candidates reflects a mix of experience and new-generation leadership set to colour the state election.
Meanwhile, Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said a total of 172 candidates were confirmed to be contesting after the nomination process closed at 10am today.
Of that number, 138 are male candidates while the remaining 34 are female.
The 40-to-49 age group recorded the highest number of candidates at fifty, followed by 48 candidates aged 50 to 59, 38 candidates aged 30 to 39, and 27 candidates aged 60 and above, while only nine candidates are aged between 21 and 29.
According to him, Barisan Nasional (BN) and PH have each fielded candidates in all 56 state seats, while PN is contesting 33 seats.
In addition, Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) has fielded fifteen candidates, Ikatan Demokratik Malaysia (Muda) four candidates, while Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (Asli) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) have one candidate each, alongside six independent candidates.
"A total of 27 state seats will see three-cornered contests, fourteen seats will be straight fights, twelve seats will see four-cornered contests and three seats will see five-cornered contests.
"The EC has set 7 July as the date for early voting, while 11 July will be polling day," he said.
A total of 2,727,926 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this election, comprising 2,703,175 ordinary voters, 12,041 military personnel and their spouses, and 12,710 police personnel and their spouses.
