The Olympics delivered a first full day of action at Paris 2024 on Saturday after a memorable opening ceremony.

Team GB earned its first medal of the Games after Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen claimed diving bronze in dramatic circumstances, winning Britain’s first medal in women’s diving in 64 years.

That was followed by a superb road cycling silver from Anna Henderson in the women’s individual time trial amid treacherous rain in Paris but there was heartbreak for Josh Tarling – who just missed out in the men’s TT after finishing in fourth place due to a puncture.

The swimming took centre stage this evening with Team GB’s focus on Adam Peaty as he cruised through his semi-final in his bid to win three consecutive 100m breaststroke Olympic gold medals. But the most eagerly-anticipated race of the day, and perhaps the meet, saw Katie Ledecky, Ariarne Titmus and Summer McIntosh against each other in the women’s 400m freestyle. It was Australia’s Titmus who defended her title ahead of McIntosh, with Ledecky trailing in third.

And hosts France completed a dream men’s rugby sevens triumph as Antoine Dupont inspired the hosts to dethrone two-time defending Olympic champions Fiji in a thrilling final at the Stade de France.

Follow all the action, latest results and medals from Paris 2024 in our live blog below:

Ariarne Titmus defeats rival Katie Ledecky to cement Olympic crown in 400m freestyle final

22:35

Luke Baker

Australia’s Ariarne Titmus defended her Olympic title in the women’s 400m freestyle final ahead of Canada’s Summer McIntosh while finishing more than three seconds clear of American great Katie Ledecky.

In the highly anticipated rematch of their thrilling final in Tokyo three years ago, Titmus added to her growing reputation as she led from start to finish and executed a carefully managed race to claim a victory that at, 3:57:49, was still two seconds off her world record time.

At 17, McIntosh claimed her first Olympic medal while Ledecky, the seven-time Olympic champion, took a step closer to becoming America’s most decorated female Olympian. The 27-year-old, who is competing at her fourth Games, needs two more medals of any kind in Paris.

Olympics 2024: Rafael Nadal fuming at tennis scheduling

22:10

More complaints coming from the tennis players at Roland Garros - this time from Rafael Nadal. After playing some late-night doubles with Carlos Alcaraz this evening, the Spaniard appears to be playing early tomorrow afternoon - not ideal for his recovery.

“I’m playing at 2pm? I don't understand, it's 10 at night. It seems outrageous to me! I’ll have to talk to the team to see what is the best option to achieve results.”

Matt Richards spoke to BBC TV after Team GB finished fifth in the men’s 4x100m freestyle final.

“It is frustrating, we really wanted to try and get into the medals tonight, so it is tough to have come out on the wrong side of it. I thought we all put in a great effort, all four of us, after competing this morning as well. We couldn’t have asked for much more, an honest effort and we move on to tomorrow.

On the 4x200m freestyle relay: “The relays are a huge opportunity for us, we really want to get after it and put ourselves up against the best. We will give it our all.”

Adam Peaty set for shot at Olympics history as main contender becomes clear

21:18

Luke Baker

Adam Peaty gave a simple message before the latest step of his 100m breaststroke defence: bring the A-Game. And although not yet looking the same force as three years ago, the Olympic champion remains the one to beat as he cruised into Sunday night’s final in Paris.

A shot at history now awaits, as Peaty bids to become only the second male swimmer after Michael Phelps to win the same event at three successive Olympics.

But his closest competitor for gold is now firmly in view. China’s Qin Haiyang brings an intriguing rivalry to the Olympics and will start next to the Briton, with Peaty in his favoured lane 4 and Qin in 5. Peaty’s time of 58.86 seconds was just 0.07 ahead of Qin in their respective semi-finals, and if the margins are that tight when going for gold then it will be an electrifying race, both inside and outside of the pool.

Not quite the splash and dash of the 50m freestyle but there’s plenty of water flying everywhere. China lead after 50m and they hold on to that until the end of the first leg. USA second, Hungary third with Team GB just outside the medals.

USA come through strongly on the second leg and take the lead, with China down to second. Then it’s a battle royale for third by the halfway mark.

Tom Dean with a good swim on the third leg for Team GB but USA extend their lead and look set for gold. Italy surge into third, with China in second. 100m to go!

Caeleb Dressel leads USA home to GOLD in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Kyle Chalmers charges through the field to take silver for Australia and Italy win the bronze! Team GB end up fifth, just behind China

The final race of the evening is the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay and Team GB are in medal contention, having qualified third fastest. They’ve never won a medal in this event but the quartet of Matt Richards, Jacob Whittle, Tom Dean and Duncan Scott have a real chance.

Beating one of Australia, USA or China will be a big ask though.

Australia lead after the first leg, ahead of China with the US pushing hard in third. GB not far away from the medal places after a good start by Anna Hopkin.

The Australians lead by 0.65s at the halfway mark with Sweden pushing up to third behind China. Emma McKeon’s third leg gives Australia a 0.61s lead over the USA, who come on strong ahead of China.

Meg Harris can defend the lead down the final 100m and Australia win the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay! An almighty battle for silver and United States juuuust edge out China, who touch in third. Team GB finished seventh in the end.

It’s a fourth straight Olympic title for the Aussies - they’re almost unbeatable in this event.

It’s time for the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay final. Team GB in lane 1 and only an outside chance of a medal, in reality. They British quartet is Anna Hopkin, Eva Okarao, Lucy Hope and Freya Anderson.

Australia’s B team were the fastest qualifiers this morning and they make two changes to bring in the big guns. They should win this, fairly comfortably, as the class of the field but the USA will try to push them hard at least.

Olympics 2024: Swimming - Adam Peaty ‘wants to be the fastest boy'

20:34

Luke Baker

Adam Peaty has given some quick thoughts after that semi-final win.

He told Sharron Davies poolside: “It’s an absolute privilege to be out there after what I’ve been through. Sport is so testing, so you can’t beat that really. It was a great crowd, I enjoyed it out there and I’m loving it again.

“My son always says to me ‘Daddy are you the fastest boy?’ That’s what he says. Even if I haven’t seen him for two weeks, he always asks! I guess that’s all he cares about! I want to be the ‘fastest boy’ tomorrow for him.

The second semi-final in the men’s 100m breaststroke is won by China’s Qin Haiyang, who is Peaty’s biggest rival but he’s slower and touches in 58.93s. All promising signs for Peaty...

James Wilby misses out on qualification as Melvin Imoudu of Germany and Italy’s Ludovico Blu Art Viberti finished tied for fourth, in a quicker time than the Brit managed when coming fifth in the first semi-final.

Olympics 2024: Swimming

Very impressive by Adam Peaty, as he cruises into the men’s 100m breaststroke final. He led almost from the start and although some rivals came back at him down the final 25 metres, he touched the wall first in a time of 58.86s. That was half a second quicker than his heat swim this morning.

Maybe he’s not quite the imperious, unbeatable Peaty of the past but he’s looking strong and has to be favourite. Nic Fink of the USA comes second, with Nicolo Martinenghi in third. The other Brit James touches in fifth, with a time of 59.49s, and now faces an anxious wait during the second semi-final to see if he’ll reach the final. Can only afford three men faster than his time, so all eyes on whoever finishes fourth.

It’s Adam Peaty time back in the pool. The 100m breaststroke legend is in semi-final action as he looks to move a step closer to a historic thrid straight Olympic title in the event.

He’s in lane 4 for the first semi-final, with fellow Brit James Wilby alongside him. The fastest eigh men from the two semis will reach the final tomorrow evening. Can Peaty take care of business after a dramatic Olympic cycle to reach this point?

Good news for Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz fans as they go through in the men’s doubles at Roland Garros.

What a swim as Ariarne Titmus defends her women’s 400m freestyle Olympic title with a brilliant swim! She led wire to wire and Summer McIntosh takes second but is a little way behind.

Katie Ledecky completely dropped and has to settle for a hard-fought bronze. Superb stuff by the Australian.

Here. We. Go! The women’s 400m freestyle final is here. The unbeatable(?) Katie Ledecky, taking on the legendary world record holder Ariarne Titmus and 17-year-old superstar Summer McIntosh in perhaps the biggest race of the entire swimming meet.

Also, don’t write off another American, Erika Fairweather, who actually qualified for this final faster than McIntosh. Who will come out on top? Ledecky is a distance swimmer with the stamina, Titmus races the shorter distances as well and has the explosive speed.

And Lukas Martens wins Germny’s first gold medal of Paris 2024. From lane 4, Martens led the men’s 400m freestyle final from about 100m. He was a distance guy but has dropped down from 1500m and 800m to 400 and showed his stamina here to hold off some hard-charging opponents.

Not the fastest time, as he clocks 3.41.78, but it was a superb swim as the fast-finishing Elijah Winnington of Australia took silver and Kim Woomin claimed bronze. Brilliant by Martens - a rare German gold in the pool.

The second semi-final in the women’s 100m butterfly is unsurprisingly not as fast as Gretchen Walsh’s Olympic record in SF1!

Another American, Torri Huske, takes victory in 56.00s dead, ahead of China’s Zhang Yufei, reigning champion Margaret Mac Neil of Canada and Australia’s Emma McKeon but all of them reach the final. Walsh will take some beating tomorrow.

Now it’s the first final of the evening. The men’s 400m freestyle - arguably a warm-up for the blockbuster women’s race that will follow (Ledecky v Titmus v McIntosh) but this will still be interesting with the likes of Fei Liwei, Lukas Martens and Guilherme Costa vying for gold.

It’s the women’s 100m butterfly semi-finals first up in the pool this evening with GB’s Keanna Macinnes going in the first semi-final from lane eight. A tough ask for Macinnes who snuck into the semi-finals and she ultimately finishes eighth in the first semi-final.

USA’s Gretchen Walsh sets an Olympic record of 55.38s as she cruises into the final and wasn’t far away from a world record! Walsh a huge favourite in this event now, surely. Angelina Koehler of Germany in second and Japan’s Hirai Mizuki in third. The fastest eight swimmers across the two semi-finals will reach the final.

Ok, attention will now turn to the pool where the first swimming finals of the Olympics are taking place and there are some superstars in action.

The women’s 400m freestyle final sees the legendary Katie Ledecky taking on fierce rivals Summer McIntosh and Ariarne Titmus in arguably the biggest race of the entire meet.

Adam Peaty will also continue his quest for a historic third straight 100m breaststroke gold as he goes in the semi-finals, trying to book a spot in the final. Here are some of the race timings:

  • 19:52: Women’s 400m freestyle, including Ariarne Titmus, Katie Ledecky, and SummerMcIntosh
  • 20:12: Men’s 100m breaststroke semi-finals, featuring Britain’s Adam Peaty

Josh Tarling gives blunt two-word response as puncture denies cyclist Olympic time trial medal

18:05

Luke Baker

Great Britain’s Josh Tarling missed out on an Olympic bronze medal in the men’s individual time trial by just 2.16 seconds after his efforts to salvage his race following an early puncture ended in heartbreak on the streets of Paris.

Tarling suffered a puncture to his front tyre and had to change his bike as he navigated the 32.4-km course, which was made dangerously wet by heavy rain. But despite that early setback, the 20-year-old Tarling managed to claw back time to threaten the medal positions.

Ultimately, though, Tarling finished agonisingly short of the podium, with Belgium’s Wout van Aert claiming bronze, Italy’s Filippo Ganna silver and Remco Evenpoel winning gold for the Belgium team. The top four finished within 28 seconds of each other and well ahead of the rest of the field. There was a further 35 seconds from Tarling to the USA’s Brandon McNulty in fifth.

17:09

Josh Tarling shared some wise words after narrowly missing out on an Olympic medal. Visibly disappointed, the 20-year-old Welshman was forced into an early bike change, falling just two seconds short of the podium places.

“S*** happens init, it just sucks, you know, everyone put a lot of effort in.”

“It was a front puncture on the rim. If it was slow I might have ridden it, but being on the rim I had to change. Right now its annoying, but we still have the road race to come.”

17:03

Arthur Ferridge

Filippo Ganna crosses the line in 36:27.08, flying over the line to knock Wout van Aert off top spot and put one hand on a gold medal.

Until, that is, the last man to cross the line Remco Evenepoel went one better, taking a further 15 seconds out of Ganna to put in a golden time of 36:12.16. It is a simply incredible performance from the Belgian, who bursts into tears of joy immediately after crossing the line. He will join his countryman Wout van Aert on the podium.

The touching scenes make less pleasant reading for Team GB, as Evenepoel and Ganna’s times knock Josh Tarling down to fourth. He will be left wondering where he might have finished if he had not suffered an early flat tire.

Here are your final standings in the men’s time trial:

1) R. Evenepoel (BEL) - 36:12.16

2) F. Ganna (ITA) - 36:27.08

3) W. van Aert (Bel) - 36:37.79

The ever-changing top spot has a new resident: Stefan Bissegger crosses the line in 37:38.57 to knock off Vacek.

A new rider is eyeing up that top spot, though, with Remco Evenopoel 7.41 seconds ahead of Filippo Ganna after 13.1km. He still has a ways to go, but will be one to watch through the rest of the event.

Tarling is holding his own, but still struggling to make up for the time lost during his bike swap.

Wout van Aert seems to be on track for the top spot at the moment, recording the fastest time of the afternoon so far at the halfway point.

Crucially, Josh Tarling is only three seconds off the Belgian’s pace despite suffering a flat tire early in his outing.

As things stand, your top three remains Vacek in the gold medal spot, Mullen second, and the new addition of France’s Vauquelin in third, though this is far from final. Plenty of riders are yet to finish!

The second heat will start just after 5pm BST.

Anna Henderson after cycling silver: ‘I thought I could lose the Olympics in one corner'

Jamie Braidwood

Great Britain’s Anna Henderson after navigating a slippery Paris course and treacherous rain to win a stunning silver medal in the women’s individual time trial earlier today.

On winning silver:

“I can’t believe it. I had a small feeling I could make the podium today and squeeze out some of the other riders, but I can’t believe I’ve come second behind someone like Grace [Brown, Australia’s gold medallist]. I burst into tears when I found out I was second. I just can’t stop smiling.” On the weather:

“I didn’t realise how slippery it was out there until I was on the course. I thought ‘I could lose a whole Olympic Games on one corner here’.

“I saw a lot of girls have problems today so I’m really happy I could hold it up. You try to stay relaxed but you freeze up in those corners and I was just telling myself, ‘don’t pull the brakes, stay away from the white paint’, it was about taking it step by step. That plan paid off and here I am, I can’t believe it.”

Olympics 2024: Men’s canoe slalom

The heats of the men’s canoe slalom singles are underway and Team GB’s Adam Burgess is well on course to reach the semi-finals.

He currently sits second in the standings after recording a time of 90.87 seconds in heat one, with the top 16 after two runs going through to Monday’s semi-final.

European silver medallist Burgess only trails France’s Nicolas Gestin (by 0.97s) and as long as he basically doesn’t capsize on his second run, he’ll be safely through to the semis. Those second runs are getting underway shortly, at 4.10pm BST.
