The Olympics has reached its final day with Team GB adding more medals to conclude a successful Paris 2024.

Emma Finucane won her third medal of the Olympics, adding bronze in the women’s sprint on Sunday to gold in the women’s team sprint and bronze in the women’s keirin. Finucane defeated Hetty van de Wouw in the bronze medal final, but there was disappointment for Jack Carlin as he crashed out of the men’s keirin final on the last day of action at the Velodrome.

Emily Campbell won bronze in the women’s weightlifting final, adding to the historic silver medal she claimed in Tokyo three years ago. Campbell’s bronze was Great Britain’s 65th medal of the Games, which took them above their total from Tokyo.

Earlier, Sifan Hassan prevailed in a race for the ages thanks to a vicious kick after more than 26 miles to fend off world record holder Tigst Assefa and win gold in the women’s marathon.

The final medal of the games comes in the women’s basketball with USA looking to win and take top spot in the medal table as they go up against hosts France.

Olympics 2024: United States 63-59 France

16:16

Harry Latham-Coyle

Superb defence from Marieme Badiane! A’ja Wilson pivots and pivots but there’s no-one to pass to, and the ball-handling American is called for a foul.

But France make a hash of their possession! Marine Fauthoux isolates herself and eventually forces off an ambitious three, which Breanna Stewart gets a paw to.

France foul A’ja Wilson. Her first free throw doesn’t fall, but the second is safely dispatched. It’s more than a score with 17 seconds to play.

Olympics 2024: United States 62-59 France

16:14

Harry Latham-Coyle

Kayleah Copper again shimmies away and into the paint, a neat hand-off from Breanna Stewart creating room for Copper to slash to the basket. Her lay-up goes unanswered as a slightly desperate heave from France bounces out of play. We’ll take another pause inside 60 seconds to go.

Olympics 2024: United States 60-59 France

16:11

Harry Latham-Coyle

Kelsey Plum makes the United States’ 27th and 28th free throws of the afternoon, but can’t get a three point shot to drop, the shot dancing around the cliff edge yet somehow not falling.

Gabby Williams! Two points to narrow the gap. 92 seconds left and a timeout.

Olympics 2024: United States 58-57 France

16:08

Harry Latham-Coyle

Jackie Young is fouled out. She blocks Gabby Williams trying desperately to prevent the power forward collecting the inbound.

To the free throw line goes Williams. The first shot...good. The second...it’s there. Nerveless stuff. France back within a point.

Olympics 2024: United States 58-55 France

16:06

Harry Latham-Coyle

Another timely two from A’ja Wilson! Off the rim, off the top of the backboard, and down the chimney like Santa on Christmas Eve.

Olympics 2024: United States 55-55 France

16:02

Harry Latham-Coyle

Back and forth, back and forth. Both sides make two from two from the free throw line before France miss two shots in quick succession. Kahleah Copper neatly dances beneath the rim and hooks her shot in; Gabby Williams replies in kind.

Three minutes and 45 seconds to play.

Olympics 2024: United States 51-51 France

16:00

Harry Latham-Coyle

Five minutes left and there’s nothing to separate them. A France win here really would be one of the stories of this Olympics. Can they pull off one of the great Games upsets?

Olympics 2024: United States 49-47 France

15:56

Harry Latham-Coyle

A 17th turnover from the United States leads to a corner three from Valeriane Ayayi, who can’t quite find it, clipping the rim. A’ja Wilson takes advantage, the two-time WNBA MVP up to 16 points and 12 boards. She’s almost single-handedly hauling her side towards the gold.

15:53

Harry Latham-Coyle

Into the final ten minutes at Bercy Arena. It just felt like the United States upped their intensity after falling ten points behind, playing with much more physicality and fight, not letting France’s rebounders have as much of a say. Both sides trade misses before Marieme Badiane pops one in to level things up.

Can either side get hot like Steph Curry did last night to take the game away? Marine Johannes continues to hurl her three-pointers up, the guard now three from 13 from the field.

Olympics 2024: United States 45-43 France

15:46

Harry Latham-Coyle

Marine Johannes from downtown! Finally one sticks for the shooting guard, her sixth attempt of the day from distance at last landing just when France needed something.

To the fourth quarter we go with just two points in it.

Olympics 2024: United States 41-40 France

15:42

Harry Latham-Coyle

Huge plays at both ends of the court from A’ja Wilson, first denying France a seemingly certin two with a brilliant block and then contorting a shot home. Sabrina Ionescu and Napheesa Collier then combine on the fast-break as momentum begins to swing back the USA’s way.

Olympics 2024: United States 33-35 France

15:36

Harry Latham-Coyle

Boos and whistles from the crowd as Marine Johannes falls to the floor after taking an arm to the face from A’ja Wilson. The officials don’t halt proceedings, though, and the United States capitalise, closing the gap to a couple of points through a Kelsey Plum triple.

Olympics 2024: United States 25-33 France

15:29

Harry Latham-Coyle

France are flying! Valeriane Ayayi nails a long two and then goes one better, a beautiful parabola from range as France open the third with eight straight points.

Olympics 2024: United States 25-25 France - third quarter

15:26

Harry Latham-Coyle

Back underway at Bercy Arena. Will the United States click into gear and power away? Or is one of the great Olympic shocks on? Remember, the USA need to win to top the medal table ahead of China.

Eiffel Tower evacuated after man seen climbing hours before Olympics closing ceremony

15:20

Jack Rathborn in Paris

The area surrounding the Eiffel Tower has been evacuated after a man was seen climbing up the Paris landmark hours before the Olympics closing ceremony.

Footage on social media spread of a shirtless man climbing the 330-meter (1,083-foot) tall tower on Sunday afternoon.

It’s unclear where he began his ascent, but he was spotted just above the Olympic rings adorning the second section of the monument, just above the first viewing deck.

Olympics 2024: United States 25-25 France

15:13

Harry Latham-Coyle

A tip-in beats the buzzer for the United States to draw back on level terms at the half-time interval. They have been largely second best so far in a scrappy contest that has rather suited this French side with the crowd behind them. Remember, the USA’s women haven’t lost at the Olympics since 1992.

Olympics 2024: United States 23-23 France

15:06

Harry Latham-Coyle

From the other side of Paris! A remarkable three from the Paris 2024 logo on halfway, Marine Fauthoux tossing a prayer and having it answered with nothing but net. We’ll take a timeout with the two teams locked together at 23 apiece.

Olympics 2024: United States 18-16 France

14:57

Harry Latham-Coyle

France rally at the start of the second, Gabby Williams draining her second three from distance with the United States yet to find their flow.

Jackie Young gets the defending champions’ scoring started again, left all alone on an inbound and taking advantage with a mid-range two.

Olympics 2024: United States 15-9 France

14:51

Harry Latham-Coyle

Real impact from Brittany Griner off the bench, the American big using her size to post up in the paint and strike twice late in the quarter. Another French shot from the field fails to fall as time expires, leaving them six points in arrears as both teams take a breather.

Olympics 2024: United States lead women’s basketball gold medal match

14:45

Harry Latham-Coyle

A low-scoring start to this tight, tense and physical final, both defences dominating and forcing low-percentage shots. France have had twice as many shots as the United States and are dominating the boards, but just two of their 16 attempts have found the hoop.

It’s eight points to five in the USA’s favour with just under three minutes to go in the quarter.

Olympics 2024: Cartwheeling Emily Campbell claims another Olympic medal

14:37

Harry Latham-Coyle

Emily Campbell closed the show with a cartwheel after clinching bronze in the women’s +81kg category to become the first British weightlifter to win two Olympic medals in over half a century.

The Nottingham 30-year-old celebrated on stage after setting a new combined personal best of 288kg over snatch and clean-and-jerk disciplines to finish behind defending champion Li Wenwen of China and 21-year-old Park Hye-jeong of South Korea.

An audacious bid to muscle in on silver with a last lift of 174kg fell short but there was no disguising Campbell’s delight after finishing with a cumulative total five kilograms better than the one that sealed her silver medal in Tokyo.

To the Bercy Arena for the final medal match of Paris 2024. The United States beat France to men’s basketball gold yesterday, and the heavyweights and hosts clash again today in the women’s final. Can France finish with an upset to cap a brilliant home Olympics?

How Emma Finucane battled through self doubt to become Team GB’s star of the Olympics

14:15

Jamie Braidwood in Paris

When Chris Hoy and Laura Kenny picked out a British cyclist to watch ahead of the Olympics in Paris, it was worth sitting up and taking notice. After seven brutal days at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines National Velodrome and with the pressure of being Team GB’s next great hope, Emma Finucane did not just meet those expectations but surpass them. At her first Olympics, the 21-year-old from Wales became the first British woman in 60 years to win three medals at a single Games.

Bryony Page and Alex Yee to carry British flag at closing ceremony

14:00

Harry Latham-Coyle

Confirmation has come through that it will be triathlon gold medallist Alex Yee and trampolining champion Bryony Page carrying the Team GB flag at tonight’s closing ceremony.

“When I got the call to tell me, I couldn’t believe it, it truly is such an honour,” Page says. “For a sport like trampolining, which is quite niche, it’s quite amazing - and to be able to hold the flag for all of the Team GB Olympians here is incredible. It’s a very emotional and proud moment, and I cannot wait to hold the flag for every single athlete who has competed - congratulations to every single one of them for their performances and how they have supported every other team member, it’s such a special team to be a part of.

“To have won an Olympic gold at my third Games and now to be given this honour, it just caps the incredible experience that Paris 2024 has been for me.”

And Yee adds: ““I’m really excited and honoured to be given the opportunity to be one of the Team GB flagbearers. It means a lot to me.

“The Closing Ceremony is a key part of the Olympic experience and having not got to experience it in Tokyo, I wanted to come to it in Paris. So, to be able to go to it, first of all, was really special, but then to get the phone call this morning to be asked to hold the GB flag was really, really special.

“There’s been so many incredible performances over the last two weeks from Team GB, so to be selected as somebody who’s represented Team GB well and made the country proud is really special.”

Olympics 2024: Team GB finish with 65 medals

13:56

Harry Latham-Coyle

And that is that for British involvement at Paris 2024.

Olympics 2024: Emily Campbell speaks to the BBC after winning weightlifting bronze

13:54

Harry Latham-Coyle

“The field today was a lot tougher than what it was in Tokyo,” Campbell explains after winning a second Olympic medal. “The standard was so high and I had to pull it out of the bag. In Tokyo I was new to the sport and enjoying things, it was a bonus medal.

“This one come from the heart, we have had a tough one building-up, but we pulled it out at the right time. It was a PB performance, so you cannot complain.

“It was like having a British crowd today and these guys make everything.

“I have been away for a while and these girls have forgot what I could do - I wanted to remind them. Snatch is the weaker one of my two and it would set me up really well to get a medal.

“I had so much fun getting ready for this doing my hair and makeup. I wanted to give it my all and I was so happy that I got rewarded.”

Olympics 2024: Jennifer Valente defends women’s omnium title

13:43

Harry Latham-Coyle

A 39th gold of Paris 2024 for Team USA, one fewer than China, with the women’s basketball final against France still to come. It’s looking good for the United States to top the medal table again.

Olympics 2024: Jennifer Valente defends women’s omnium title!

13:36

Harry Latham-Coyle

But clear of the field by a distance is the brilliant Jennifer Valente, Olympic omnium champion once more! It’s been an exhibition from the American, winning her second gold of Paris 2024 after producing a masterclass across all four events. Wins in the scratch and elimination races, second in the tempo, and then making totally certain with that lap-gain in the points race to triumph again.

Daria Pikulik cries tears of joy having taken two laps to force her way into silver. Youngster Ally Wollaston continues an excellent final day for New Zealand by securing bronze.

GOLD: Jennifer Valente (USA)

Silver: Daria Pikulik (Poland)

Bronze: Ally Wollaston (New Zealand)

13:31

Harry Latham-Coyle

A second lap of the race for Ally Wollaston, the Kiwi bumping trans-Tasman foe Georgia Baker, yet to show herself really in this points race, down from silver to bronze.

Into the final ten laps, the riders’ legs absolutely screaming at this point. And Baker is knocked out of the medals - Daria Pikulik takes a lap and would win silver as things stand. There are double points available at the final sprint, which Wollaston will have to win to usurp the Pole.

13:25

Harry Latham-Coyle

Neah Evans is part of a leading quartet now, Poland’s Daria Pikulik the best placed of those riders. Lotte Kopecky goes on the offensive, drawing a response from our leader with Jennifer Valente seeking a lap to make totally certain.

Pikulik is up into provisitional third. And Valente gains a lap! 20 more points all but secures another omnium Olympic gold with 32 laps to go.

Amelie Dideriksen (Denmark) was dragged through by Valente - she is also now very much in the medal mix.

Olympics 2024: Track cycling - women’s omnium points race

13:21

Harry Latham-Coyle

Lara Gillespie and Anita Stenberg go on the attack, the two riders taking about two-thirds of a lap from the field. Gillespie managed to gain a lap in the tempo race earlier, and it looks good for the pair - 20 points apiece! Norway’s Stenberg is up into bronze medal position as things stand with Ireland’s Gillespie just three points out of the podium places.

Olympics 2024: Track cycling - women’s omnium points race

13:17

Harry Latham-Coyle

A tremendous reception for Valentine Fortin, racing for little bar pride but roared on by her home crod as she is first to really make a move from the pack, scooping up some sprint points. And she gains a lap, too - that moves her up into 15th.

Jennifer Valente picked up five early points to extend her lead, sitting pretty at the top of the omnium standings a quarter of a way through the final race.

Olympics 2024: Track cycling - women’s omnium points race

13:11

Harry Latham-Coyle

Nobody managed to gain any lap points in Tokyo, though Laura Kenny gave it everything as she attempted, ultimately unsuccessfully, to force her way into the medals. Could someone like Lotte Kopecky produce something outrageous to storm up the standings?

13:10

Harry Latham-Coyle

One last race on the track, then, before it is au revoir to the cycling programme at Paris 2024. Defending champion Jennifer Valente leads the women’s omnium by ten points, with Georgia Baker the only woman within 22 points of the leader - surely the American can’t be beaten here? 80 laps for the field to negotiate.

Olympics 2024: Emma Finucane on her women’s sprint bronze

12:53

Harry Latham-Coyle

“It feels like a home crowd in here,” the three-time Olympic medallist tells Eurosport. “I can’t believe I’ve finished on a high - winning a race to finish my Olympics is such an unreal feeling. That’s why I celebrated so much. I want to take everything in that I can. I’m just so proud. A bronze medal means everything to me.”

Olympics 2024: Jack Carlin crashes out of men’s keirin final as Harrie Lavreysen wins gold

12:50

Harry Latham-Coyle

That’s five Olympic golds now for Harrie Lavreysen to go with 13 world titles at the age of 27 - extraordinary. The Dutchman finds his family and fans in the crowd with, thankfully, the rest of the riders back on their feet, it would seem.

A 15th Dutch gold of the Games takes them above Team GB on the medal table. Emily Campbell’s weightlifting bronze is Great Britain’s 65th, one more than their tally in Tokyo, though with eight fewer golds.

It wasn’t to be for Emily Campbell as the two competitiors ahead of her were superb. China’s Li Wenwen was nigh on untouchable in her pursuit of the goal while South Korea’s Park Hyejeong set a personal best combined total of 299kg to win silver.

Campbell’s 288kg, made up of a personal best 126kg in the snatch and an easy 162kg in the clean & jerk was also a combined PB for the Brit. She could have improved but attempted to win silver on her final left with a massive 174kg weight.

She couldn’t get it and settled for bronze.

12:42

Harry Latham-Coyle

The medics are attending to Jack Carlin, the back of his skinsuit torn in two. He’s sitting up and testing the mobility of his shoulders and neck, beginning to get to his feet. He is able to walk off the track gingerly, which is great to see.

Olympics 2024: Weightlifting +81kg

12:41

Mike Jones

Emily Campbell. One lift. A personal best. 174kg for silver.

No! It’s not to be for the Brit and she backs up her silver from Tokyo with a bronze in Paris!

China’s Li Wenwen takes the gold and South Korea’s Park Hyejeong wins silver.

Olympics 2024: Jack Carlin crashes out of men’s keirin final

12:40

Harry Latham-Coyle

Yet more drama on the track for Great Britain - Jack Carlin crashes heavily in the men’s keirin final, he and a couple of other riders colliding at high speed and slamming into the surface. Oh, that’s awful, Carlin out of the medal chase in the final lap but trying desperately to force the issue, and getting caught up in a tangle.

But clear of the chaos is Harrie Lavreysen, perhaps the greatest sprinter of all time winning gold number three of a superlative Games. He forces Matthew Richardson to settle for silver again; Matthew Glaetzer embraces his teammate having won bronze.

GOLD: Harrie Lavreysen (Netherlands)

Silver: Matthew Richardson (Australia)

Bronze: Matthew Glaetzer (Australia)

Olympics 2024: Weightlifting +81kg

12:39

Mike Jones

Li Wenwen is incredible. She’s the reigning Olympic champion and is backing up her performance from Tokyo. A clean & jerk of 173kg takes her up to 309kg combined.

Park comes out for her final lift at 173kg. This is to increase pressure on Emily Campbell. Her clean is good but the jerk lets her down and she sits second with 299kg.

It looks like a silver medal for her but Campbell has one attempt. She needs to lift 174kg to nick it from the South Korean...

Olympics 2024: Weightlifting +81kg

12:36

Mike Jones

Here comes Emily Campbell.

She’s going to have to lift more than she ever has to get herself up to silver. This attempt is at 169kg but she can’t get the clean going properly.

It’s a missed attempt at what would have been her personal best. To get silver at the minute she would need to lift 174kg. That’s tough.

Olympics 2024: Weightlifting +81kg

12:34

Mike Jones

167kg! China’s Li Wenwen goes over 300kg for her total with a first clean & jerk lift of 167kg and regains her top spot.

Park has come back out before Campbell to attempt 168kg. It’s good, it’s very, very good! The 21-year-old stays in second spot with one lift left.

She’s hit personal bests in both disciplines and sits at 299kg.

Olympics 2024: Weightlifting +81kg

12:31

Mike Jones

Park Hyejeong of South Korea is up next with a lift of 163kg. Her best in the clean & jerk is a 166kg and she makes this one look a touch tricky.

It’s solid though and she gets the three white lights to move her into the lead at 294kg. Her personal best total is 296kg and she’s on course to beat that.

Work to do for Emily Campbell if she wants more than a bronze medal. That bronze is secured after Mary Anne Theisen-Lappen of the USA misses a weight of 165kg.

Campbell is current second with Park and China’s Li Wenwen the only competitiors (along with the Brit )left to lift.

Olympics 2024: Weightlifting +81kg

12:25

Mike Jones

Duangaksorn Chaidee has 160kg on the bar for her final lift. She’s hoping to improve on her 272kg total but can’t! It’s an unsuccessful but glorious end for the women from Thailand.

Now it’s time for Emily Campbell. She stride out to the platform to attempt a lift of 162kg for her opener. It would be her in first place.

It’s a nice clean and a brilliant jerk, Campbell smiles widly and moves to first with total of 288kg!

Olympics 2024: Emma Finucane wins BRONZE in women’s sprint!

12:19

Harry Latham-Coyle

There it is! Unstoppable stuff from Team GB’s new track star and Emma Finucane adds individual sprint bronze to her collection to cap an outstanding Olympic debut.

She is the first British athlete to win three medals at these Olympics. Hetty van de Wouw just didn’t have a response when Finucane pushed her pace on the pedals, the Dutch rider perhaps a little fatigued after her semi-final went to a decider.

Now, will gold and silver be settled in just two races? Of course they will, Ellesse Andrews in a different class as she secures twin keirin and sprint successes.

Women’s sprint result:

GOLD: Ellesse Andrews (New Zealand)

Silver: Lea Friedrich (Germany)

Bronze: Emma Finucane (Great Britain)

Olympics 2024: Women’s marathon

09:37

Mike Jones

The winning time was 2:22.55. It’s not a quick time, in terms of a marathon, but the course was difficult and it’s been scorching hot making it very testing.

Sifan Hassan came through the test and got over the line. She’s had a remarkable Olympic games, bronze in both the 5000m and 10000m races on the track and now a gold in the marathon!
