It has been another action-packed day at the Olympics with Team GB extending their record start to Paris 2024.
Julien Alfred is the new queen of the track after storming to gold in the women’s 100m final. The St Lucian had too much for the USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson, producing a national record in 10.72. Daryll Neita came fourth and Dina Asher-Smith failed to qualify for the final.
Katie Ledecky won her ninth Olympic gold medal to set swimming history and equal the all-time women’s record as she defend her 800m freestyle title. Great Britain lost both their title and world record to the United States in the mixed 4x100m medley relay. Adam Peaty, who said earlier that he has not has not sufficiently recovered from Covid, was not part of the team.
Simone Biles was back in action and dominated proceedings to grab her third gold of the Games with a scintillating performance in the vault final, after Jake Jarman claimed bronze in the men’s floor final. However, Max Whitlock agonisingly missed out on a medal by finishing fourth in the pommel horse as he failed to claim a historic third straight gold medal but rides into retirement as an Olympic legend.
It was the final day of rowing this morning and Great Britain ended a hugely successful regatta by claiming a superb gold in the men’s eight and taking a creditable bronze medal in the women’s eight. Emma Wilson then added bronze in the women’s windsurfing as she dominated the class all week but could only come third in the medal race, while Remco Evenepoel added men’s road race gold to his time trial victory last weekend.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce misses 100m semi-final hours after ‘rule change’ mix-up

Two-time Olympic 100 champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce‘s missed the women’s 100m final at Paris 2024 after pulling out before the semi-finals.
No immediate reason was revealed for the Jamaican’s absence, which was announced on the scoreboard at the Stade de France moments before the semi-final battle with Sha’Carri Richardson and Julien Alfred.
The shock announcement came several hours after footage spread on social media of the 37-year-old caught arguing with officials after being blocked from entering a warm-up track.
The Jamaica team said on its social media site that Fraser-Pryce was eventually allowed in.

What a thrilling relay! China and the United States stayed neck and neck throughout the race with little gap between them if any. After the second swimmers finished, all three teams were around six seconds ahead of world record pace, but it would be the United States that eventually broke it, setting a new world record of 3:37.43.
It was not until the butterfly section that the US women would take the lead, edging out China by at most a half metre, eventually claiming victory by the tightest of margins. China set an Asian record and Australia an Oceania record.
The theme of American swimmers dominating both individually and in relays at Olympic swimming events continues. Katie Ledecky’s medal collection has grown at an exponential rate during these games, with a swath of other American swimmers also taking home awards.
Olympics 2024: Men’s Decathlon Final Event - 1500m - Rooth secures gold!
21:01
Arthur Ferridge
The men’s decathlon, two days worth of events, all comes down to the 1500m run, a gruelling middle distance dash.
A formidable showing in the first heat from Germany’s Niklas Kaul was not enough to put him into contention for an overall podium finish, but it would confirm Markus Rooth’s place on the top step. Considered an outsider coming into the Olympics, few if any pitched the Norwegian to get anywhere near the podium, but he will become the first Norwegian to finish in a podium place, let alone in first, for over a century.
He finishes 42 points ahead of Germany’s Leo Neugebauer in second place, with Grenada’s Lindon Victor completing the podium.

Time for the mixed 4x100m medley relay now - this event made its debut in Tokyo and Great Britain won gold with a world record.
While they may have a tough time defending their title without Adam Peaty, Duncan Scott is a worthy replacement and joins Kathleen Dawson, Anna Hopkin and James Wilby.
France are going to be roared on and Leon Marchand will be going for his fifth gold of the Games alongside his team, while China, Australia and the USA have Olympic champions in their ranks.
Julien Alfred beats Sha’Carri Richardson to Olympic 100m gold and puts Saint Lucia on the sprinting map
20:47
Arthur Ferridge
The track has a new Olympic queen, and her name is Julien Alfred. Alfred led from gun to tape, streaking away from the rest to win this 100m final in pouring rain at the Stade de France and assume her place as the world’s fastest woman.
She will be royalty in Saint Lucia forever more, too. The tiny Caribbean island had never won an Olympic medal despite sending 31 athletes to Games over the past 30 years. None were quite like Alfred, shy and unassuming but blessed with blistering speed. ‘National record’ popped up on the giant screen beside her time of 10.78sec, in perhaps the most irrelevant footnote in Olympic history.
Read more about Alfred’s victory and what it means here.
Olympics 2024: Women’s triple jump final - Another first time medalist takes gold!
20:44
Arthur Ferridge
Tonight is a night of firsts: Thea LaFond takes home Dominica’s first Olympic medal and it will be gold! Her score of 15.02m marked her as the best of the day by a margin of almost six inches, with Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts and the US’ Jasmine Moore completing the podium.
Cuba’s Leyanis Perez-Hernandez came within millimetres of claiming a bronze medal, but encroached on the board on her final jump, disqualifying the effort and losing her score. Her teammate Liadagmis Povea also very marginally missed out on the podium, the difference being just three cm.
Ana Peleteiro-Compoare, the bronze medalist from Tokyo, misses out on taking home another medal, finishing with a score of 14.59m.
Katie Ledecky makes Olympics history with ninth gold medal in swimming
20:42
Jamie Braidwood
Katie Ledecky has won her ninth Olympic gold medal to equal the all-time women’s record and defend her 800m freestyle title ahead of Ariarne Titmus.
Ledecky extended her dominance in the 800m freestyle as the world record holder edged ahead of Australian rival Titmus for her 14th Olympic medal overall.
Ledecky went into the final holding the 29 fastest times in history in the 800m freestyle but Titmus stuck with her as they separated themselves from the rest of the field.
But Ledecky found an extra gear as her USA team-mate Paige Madden joined the battle for the medal position and the American held her advantage to reach the wall over a second ahead of Titmus.
1) Ledecky - 8:11.04
2) Titmus - 8:12.29
3) Madden - 8:13.00

You may have been distracted by the women’s 100m final, and rightly so, but there is another final ongoing across the stadium!
With five out of six rounds gone, Dominica’s Thea LaFond leads by a considerable distance (15.02m), with Shanieka Ricketts (Jamaica) and Jasmine Moore (USA) close behind.
Should LaFond maintain her lead, viewers will be set to see another nation win its first ever Olympic medal just moments after Julien Alfred did so for St Lucia.

Arthur Ferridge
It is a fairytale for Julien Alfred! She wins gold with a time of 10.72s, the first ever Olympic medal for St Lucia and a national record time, beating out the odds-on favourite of Sha’carri Richardson. She crossed the line second, a full 0.15s behind the leader, with her compatriot Melissa Jefferson joining her on the opposite side of the podium in third.
Team GB’s Daryll Neita just barely missed out on sending another medal back across the Channel, finishing in fourth place just 0.04s behind Jefferson.
It is an incredible moment for Alfred, who is lcearly feeling the emotion of the moment as she celebrates with Richardson and Jefferson.

The crown jewel of athletics, the 100m sprint, is about to get underway despite the heavy rain currently lashing the track.
It will be contested by Team USA’s star Sha’carri Richardson as well as Jamaica’s Tia Clayton, with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price forced to miss out through a late injury. St Lucia will be in the hunt for its first ever Olympic medal too, with Julien Alfred taking centre stage.
The world record in this event is 10.49s, held by Florence Griffith Joyner. Will the 36 year old record be broken this evening, on a cool wet night in Paris? We will soon find out.

What an Olympics the Canadian is having. That’s her fourth medal - and that ‘s an Olympic record too in 2:06.56! Astonishing swim - and burst.
But hang on.... there’s drama at the end! Walsh is disqualified! Kaylee McKeown is promoted to bronze. Abbie Wood is fifth in the end, 1.5 seconds off the podium.

An incredible last-lap performance from Femke Bol sees the Netherlands take gold in the 4x400 relay.
Team USA stormed to an early lead in the race, with Belgium, the Netherlands, and Team GB all in the hunt close behind. As the leaders broke their lanes and fell into rank, the pack began to spread out. The Americans continued to pull ahead, though a British and Belgian surge meant that the race was far from over heading into the fourth and final runners.
The final lap brought nothing but drama. It looked to be a shootout between UK and US as Brown and Anning sparred for first and second, but then from out of nowhere came the Netherlands contingent as Femke Bol burst around the outside, making the final overtake just metres before the finish line.
The Netherlands will take home the gold, then, with Team USA and Great Britain joining them on the podium. Behind them in fourth place is Belgium, with France, Jamaica, Italy, and Poland completing the order.

Great Britain’s Abbie Wood lines up in lane 8.

Olympics 2024: Women’s 50m freestyle semi-finals - A new Olympic Record!
19:53
Arthur Ferridge
Sarah Sjoestroem has set a new Olympic Record in the 50m freestyle, sprinting across the pool in 23.66s, the fastest time of the semi-finals by quite some margin.
She finishes ahead of America’s Gretchen Walsh and Australia’s Meg Harris, while Team GB’s Anna Hopkin, who won gold in the 4x100m medley in Tokyo, just misses out on the final in fifth place.
The first heat saw medal favourite Kataryzna Wasick deliver on the promise she showed in the 50m freestyle qualification round, shaving four hundreths of a second off of her previous time. It was an incredibly tight heat, with the top five finishers separated by less than two tenths of a second.
A tie between the fourth and fifth placed finishers, China’s Wu Qingfeng and Slovakia’s Neza Klancar, could have sent the event to a swim-off dependent on the results of the second heat, though they both sneak into the final, tied for 7th place.
Olympics 2024: Adam Peaty not involved in mixed 4x100m medley relay
19:42
Jamie Braidwood
Adam Peaty is not included on Great Britain’s mixed 4x100m medley relay team that goes in defence of their Olympic title tonight.
Peaty has struggled through the “worst week” of his life after testing positive for Covid on Monday morning shortly after winning silver in the 100m breastrstroke. He returned to the pool this morning to help Team GB reach the final of the men’s 4x100m medley relay.
But he is not on the start list tonight. Kathleen Dawson, James Wilby, Anna Hopkin and Duncan Scott are the Team GB four.

Olympics 2024: Men’s Shot Put Finals
19:33
Arthur Ferridge
Team USA is producing a dominant showing in the shot put finals, currently on track to take home two out of three medals in the event.
With two attempts remaining, Oregon-born Ryan Crouser leads with an impressive 22.90m, closely followed by Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell (22.15) and fellow American Payton Otterdahl (22.01).
Sitting behind Otterdahl in fourth place is Joe Kovacs, another American, who is just 30cm short of a podium spot, which could earn Team USA an incredible 1-2-3 finish. That could be upset, though, by Leonardo Fabbri, currently fifth and just one centimetre behind Otterdahl.

Olympics 2024: Women’s football - Spain clinch shootout victory
19:11
Arthur Ferridge
Spain are through to the semi-finals at Paris 2024 after beating Colombia 4-2 on penalties.
Spain’s professionalism was too much for Colombia to handle. They scored four out of four penalties on the day, making no mistake from the spot after a slow start to the match saw them fall to a two goal deficit.
Colombian hopes were dashed in the shootout as the third taker Salazar launches her shot well over the bar and into the stands. Spain’s third penalty is beautifully taken, curled again into the top right corner by Paralluelo out of reach of Tapia.
Carabali coolly dispatched an all-or-nothing shot into the bottom right corner to keep her side’s hopes alive, setting up a score-to-win opportunity for Aitana Bonmati.
The reigning Ballon d’Or winner made no mistake, shooting high to her left and wheeling away in celebration as Tapia tipped the shot into the back of the net.
Spain’s full time jubilation was in stark contrast to Colombia’s mood as the defeated squad lay about the pitch wondering what might have been. Colombia can be more than proud of their performance, though. The team ranked 22nd in the world pushed the world champions all the way, but stumbled at the final hurdle, and ultimately it will be La Roja who live to play another day. They will face either France or Brazil in the semi finals, with that match taking place at 8pm.
Olympics 2024: Athletics - George Mills reacts after qualifying for 1,500m semi-finals
19:09
Jack Rathborn
George Mills is thrilled to be through after finishing third in the second heat of the repechage in 3:33.36: “It’s a 1500m race, so I waited as long as I could, tried to be patient and save as much energy as possible for the home straight, and I came through in the last 10 metres.
“I needed a gap to open, I was leaving it a bit late. I had a very clean first 900m. It was what I wanted to do yesterday (in the heat) but I wasn’t patient enough. Probably the emotions got a hold of me [yesterday] and I didn’t trust myself enough.”

Alfred out the blocks well and Richardson has too much to do. The St Lucian eases to the victory in 10.84!
Five-hundredths back is the Team USA star. The big two are through to the final.

Colombia captain Usme takes first for Las Cafeteras, and the spot kick simply is not a good one. Her shot is at a comfortable height for Coll, underpowered and poorly placed, allowing the Barca keeper to save with ease.
A routine pen from Caldente hands Spain the early lead, tucking her shot into the side netting.
Olympics 2024: Women’s football - Spain and Colombia face penalty shootout
18:57
Arthur Ferridge
As the first spot kicks of the evening approach, there is very different body language in either camp. Spain look assured, confident, calm. Colombia, on the other hand, sit on the grass, spent, while the goalkeeper Tapia conferences with her coaches after suffering a heavy collision in the final seconds of extra time.
Confidence is key in a shootout situation, and the world champions Spain do not seem to lack it, particularly after their impressive comeback. Cata Coll may be limited in the shootout by her protective mask after she broke her nose in an earlier Olympic match.
Colombia will be the first to shoot, and that kick is just moments away.
Olympics 2024: Athletics - Dina Asher-Smith finishes fifth
18:53
Jack Rathborn
That’s a disappointing run from Dina Asher-Smith, down in fifth, the Briton will not make the final of the 100m.
Melissa Jefferson wins the semi-final in 10.99, then Ta Lou in 11.01.
Kambundji in 11.05 must sit tight and hope to be one of the two fastest runners outside the six automatic qualifiers.

Olympics 2024: Women’s football - Spain and Colombia head to a penalty shootout
18:51
Arthur Ferridge
After 120 minutes of play, there is still nothing to separate Spain and Colombia, and the two teams will now face the one part of the game players fear above all else: the penalty shootout.
Colombia defended admirably throughout the second period of extra time as they had done since switching to a more defensive setup after scoring their second goal, though the hero of extra time for the team in yellow was goalkeeper Katherine Tapia. She rose to the occasion in a way that few others could, commanding her penalty area by claiming high ball after high ball and making one crucial save from Irene Paredes to keep her nation in the match. A late collision with Ona Batlle saw Tapia go down injured again, though she rallied through the remainder of added time.
Tapia was key to Colombia reaching this point of the match. Now she and her opposite number, Barcelona’s Cata Coll, will go toe-to-toe to see who will be their nation’s heroine and secure victory in the shootout.

Olympics 2024: Women’s football - An injury time equaliser for Spain!
18:05
Arthur Ferridge
That is the mark of a world champion team! Spain pull level in the 97th minute through Irene Paredes, who fires home after the ball fell to her in the box. It was a right place, right time goal, and Spain are right back in this match.
Colombia’s capitulation has been significant and may not yet be complete. Questions will be asked of head coach Angelo Marsiglia. After extending their lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute, he took off forwards in favour of adding defenders, content to park the bus and wait out the result.
Now staring a period of extra time in the mouth, that strategy could come back to bite him.
After a lengthy injury stoppage during which Colombia goalkeeper Katherina Tapia received treatment, there could be as much as ten minutes left to play. With the momentum at their backs, there is plenty of time for La Roja to rally and find a winner.

Team GB’s Max Whitlock spoke to BBC after finishing fourth in the men’s pommel horse final, saying that he “would have loved for it to end in a better way here in Paris”
“I do not want anyone to look at the way I am feeling now and think that it is a reflection of my career, I am so proud standing here today.
“It was a challenge getting here. I could have quit after Tokyo and I decided to come back.
“I am proud to be here. Of course I would have wanted for it to end better but my decision to come here was not based on the outcome. It was based on just being here at my fourth Olympics and to have that fourth Olympics in my journey.
“It is gutting and disappointing, of course it is, but I am proud. I am done now, I am not a gymnast any longer. I have done my final routine and I can be very happy.”
