Keely Hodgkinson is an Olympic champion after winning the women’s 800m final at the Stade de France in Paris. Hodgkinson hit the front on the first lap and led all the way to the line to clinch victory. Having won world and Olympic silver before, finally she has global gold.
In the pole vault, Mondo Duplantis broke his own world record, claiming gold then going on to take Olympic record and then secure his ninth world record with a bar clearance of 6.25m.
Great Britain’s first chance of gold today came on the cycling track, and Team GB made a perfect, record-breaking start on the first night of action in the velodrome. Katy Marchant, Emma Finucane and Sophie Capewell won gold against New Zealand in the women’s sprint final, breaking the world record for the fifth time that day.
Earlier, Joe Clarke claimed silver and Kimberley Woods settled for bronze as Team GB won two medals in the space of five minutes in the kayak cross. Woods, who previously won gold in the slalom, added her second medal of the Games before Clarke sealed his silver moments later. Team GB also won bronze in the triathlon mixed relay.
Biles faltered for the first time on the final day of the gymnastics. She fell off the balance beam during that apparatus final to miss out on a medal, and was then beaten to gold in the floor exercise final by Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade. Biles took silver to win her 11th Olympic medal overall and fourth of the Games – including three golds. Follow all the action, latest results and medals from Paris 2024 in our live blog below.

Hodgkinson gained a crown from the crowd as she did a lap of honour around the pitch, hugging and sharing her success with many teammates, friends and family who had made the journey to Paris.
When asked about the crown, she said: “I’m not sure (where it came from) it was a British supporter who threw it at me, there was lots of Brits out there, I felt like I got an applause as big as the home athletes which was great.”
On if she saw her parents: “They were the first people that I saw actually, and my dad was crying his eyes out and he’s not normally a crier.”
When asked about the pressure ahead of the race, she said: “Yeah 100 percent. The British love their Olympics and after what I did in London that kind of cemented me as a favourite and to go off the back of that, to calm down from the emotions of that, to go through a whole camp, and maintain it.
“It’s not guaranteed though, you see favourites go out, it’s such a cut-throat sport, the first aim was to get to the final.”
“I deserve it. It (being always in silver) has played on my mind since last year and I can completely – I think this year you’ve seen me really grow as an athlete.
“It’s the first year I’ve been undefeated going into a championships and I’m determined to be that way and take confidence from that. This year I’ve really tried to step up and I’m super happy that I’ve done it.”

Hodgkinson said after winning 800m gold that her feat had not sunk in yet.
I feel like it hasn’t sunk in yet I’m going to be honest. But I’ve worked so hard for this and I’m just out of words for what to say.
“The race didn’t go how I thought it was going to go, it was a bit slow at 400, but I kept composure, I felt Mary (Moraa) coming but I just knew if I was in the right mind-frame I’d be very hard to beat today.”
On pressure: “It’s definitely been different these championships and I’ve had to try and block out the noise. When people get into it in the Olympics and to live on that stage just means everything but it’s also very very difficult.
“Hats off to anyone who’s dealt with that before, it’s definitely a privilege to be here but also very very tough and credit to my team to be here and being able to put everything together.
“Back to back semi and final is tough – I am tired.”

Keely Hodgkinson arrives as Team GB’s next Olympics star after taking the hard road
21:42
Chris Wilson
Keely Hodgkinson crossed the line and for the first time all night didn’t know what to do. She looked up at the board, just to check, then she glanced up again, just to make sure. What she saw made her features wobble: at last, Hodgkinson had won gold, and Great Britain’s latest athletics star had her crowning moment at the Olympics.
Hodgkinson came to Paris with the intent of upgrading the silver she claimed in Tokyo three years ago, of ending the cycle of second-place finishes at major competitions. As she won 800m gold with a smart race and gutsy, determined finish at the Stade de France, the 22-year-old delivered, the talent becoming a champion.
And then Hodgkinson set off on a lap of pure joy, holding the British flag with her right arm and pumping the air with her fist. Somewhere she found a crown that matched the symbolic significance: in following Kelly Holmes to win 800m gold at the Olympics, she also secured Great Britain’s first gold medal on the track since Mo Farah’s double in 2016.

Hodgkinson won gold in the 800m final, even managing a fist pump as she crossed the line having been the favourite in the event from the start.
On whether Hodgkinson enjoys the favourites tag, her coach Trevor Painter said: “Well she’s not had it before, everyone was talking about anything and not Keely.”
Another coach Jenny Meadows added: “I think sometimes she does get a little bit frustrated, I think sometimes she feels that people don’t give her enough credit because she’s always second.
“I think she enjoyed the favourite tag, I think it’s quite empowering for her. She would have thought it was a failure if she didn’t win the gold medal.”
Painter pips in saying “to finally get rid of the bridesmaid tag is good.”

Keely Hodgkinson ran the perfect race to become the Olympic champion.
Speaking to the BBC afterwards she said: “I think that [the podium] is when it will sink in and you will see some real emotion from me. I have worked really hard for the last year and I think you can see how much it meant to me when I crossed the line. I can’t believe I have finally done it!
“To do it here, where better? The audience was incredible. It felt like a home crowd to me in itself in Paris, so yes I am super, super happy.”
When asked about the race itself, she said: “It could have been ran in any way. I wanted to be up near the front, probably quicker than I was at the bell. Doing the semi and final back to back I feel like everyone was tired. it was tough.
“I just wanted to save a bit for the last hundred. I trusted in myself. I could feel Mary [Moraa] pushing me on the back straight but... Composure. And we got to the line first this time so I’m super happy.”

Plenty of emotion from Hodgkinson as she carries the British flag as she runs along giving out plenty of high-fives.
Slightly nervy with around 150m to go, but she pulled away with 100m and it was never in doubt from there.
She takes the first athletics gold for Team GB since Mo Farah won at Rio 2016!
Mary Moraa, the Kenyan who finished second looked to have hurt herself in the race, afterwards she took right spike off and was shown hobbling, so that might have impacted her time.

Chris Wilson
Deep in winter training last November, Keely Hodgkinson was “absolutely flying” in training when she first felt a niggle in her knee. It quickly worsened, with tests revealing a torn ligament which, given the importance of the year ahead, was an understandable concern.
It was a concern in the medium term because it ruled her out of winning what would have been a first global title at the Glasgow World Indoor Championships, where there were hopes she could challenge the 800 metres world record. It was a concern in the longer term because it meant she missed a host of important training sessions during weeks spent recuperating away from the track. And it was an immediate concern because the only way she could keep fit was doing things like cross training and work in the swimming pool.
“She hates that because the chlorine messes her hair up and she’s always very conscious about that,” explains her coach Trevor Painter.

The Tokyo 2020 silver medallist laid down one minute 56.86 seconds in the last of the three semis, quicker than a personal best for Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma who was second of the overall 24-woman field in 1:57.47.

Simone Biles is human after all – but silver medal completes Olympic redemption
19:40
Chris Wilson
And here’s a reminder of the other big story of the day.
She’s human after all. Simone Biles settled for fifth in the beam final in Paris, before returning to deliver a mesmeric floor routine to claim a silver medal in what could be her final ever appearance at the Olympics.
A captivated audience locked in on Biles’ final two performances of these enthralling Games, with the American superstar initially tumbling off the perilous beam to miss out on a medal. But the gutsy Biles would return, with her trademark tumbling enough for an 11th Olympic medal behind only Brazil’s brilliant Rebeca Andrade in the floor final.
The American superstar had earlier turned away with a grimace after learning her beam score, 13.100, which included a 0.3 penalty. And it proved to be a challenging afternoon following redemption and a third Olympic gold after her statement performance in the vault on Saturday. But the beam provided a telling reminder that gymnastics is a sport of fine margins as Alice D’Amato claimed a famous gold for Italy.

Noah Lyles didn’t cross the line first but still won Olympic gold – anatomy of the greatest 100m final
19:23
Chris Wilson
With Noah Lyles set to compete at around 7.30pm BST in the 200m heats, here’s a reminder of how he won the 100m title yesterday.
By the time Noah Lyles started the Olympic 100m final, he was already last. Lyles took 0.178 sec to react to the gun. That might sound quick but in a sport measured in thousandths of a second, he had just given up 0.07 to one his biggest rivals, fellow American Fred Kerley.
The man Lyles most feared, Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, was just as sluggish, reacting in 0.176. Yet Thompson is the fastest man this year for a reason. He is a 100m specialist with power and a long stride, and he emerged from his drive phase at 30m with the lead.
By contrast, and despite being the 100m world champion, Lyles is a 200m runner by trade. His strength is in his top speed but he takes a little while to get there, and his slow start has sometimes been an Achilles heel. At 30m he was still dead last, eighth out of eight.

Zharnel Hughes, Letsile Tebogo, Andre De Grasse and Erriyon Knighton are among the biggest threats to Lyles.
Keely Hodgkinson goes again in the women’s 800m final, with the Team GB star likely to face a challenge from Kenya’s Mary Moraa.
The triathlon is back with the mixed relay as Alex Yee, Sam Dickinson, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Beth Potter bid to retain gold after their success in Tokyo.
And look out for Sifan Hassan on the track, the Dutch runner goes in the women’s 5000m final as she bids to tackle a historic treble in Paris. She qualified second-fasted behind Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, who is the favourite, though Italy’s Nadia Battocletti and Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay pose threats too.
