The Olympics continues with Team GB’s focus remaining on the track at both the athletics and the cycling on day 12 of Paris 2024.
Matthew Hudson-Smith’s form in his 400m semi-final marked him as a gold medal contender ahead of tonight’s final at the Stade de France - following memorable medals for Keely Hodgkinson and Josh Kerr over the past two nights - and he came so close to victory before being pipped to gold by Quincy Hall at the line, silver the reward for Hudson-Smith.
Great Britain have also made a great start in the velodrome and added further success on Wednesday in the team pursuit. The men’s team took silver as Australia claimed gold, while the women’s team led by Elinor Barker claimed bronze earlier this afternoon.
Last night, American Cole Hocker stunned world champion Kerr and reigning Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen to win a sensational 1500m gold, while Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita missed out on a medal in the women’s 200m final by the barest of margins.
This morning, golf resumed Le National as the women’s strokeplay competition got underway. Charley Hull and Georgia Hall are Great Britain’s contenders, but the favourite is the world’s best player this year: USA’s Nelly Korda. Follow all the action, latest results and medals from Paris 2024 in our live blog below.

Noah Lyles chases Olympic history in 200m final – but these rivals can stop him
22:00
Chris Wilson
Breaking news: Noah Lyles just lost a 200m race. Lyles is a double world champion over the distance and had won his last 26 races. But on a still-warm evening at the Stade de France, the American sprint king was beaten to the line in his Olympic semi-final by African champion Letsile Tebogo.
Perhaps it is more accurate to say Lyles finished second, given he comfortably qualified for Thursday night’s final. Both men eased up in the final 20m with the finish in sight and energy to conserve. But they were flat out around the bend, where Tebogo burned into the lead, and perhaps it was a sign that Lyles will not have it all his own way.
Only four men have won the triple of 100m, 200m and 4x100m gold at the Olympic games. After winning the 100m crown by five thousandths of a second on Monday night, Lyles is bidding to join a list of American icons: the great Jesse Owens (1936), Bobby Morrow (1956), who managed to make sprinting look like a light jog in the park, Carl Lewis (1984) and, of course, Usain Bolt (2012 and 2016).

Milestone medal the perfect way to signal Team GB’s turnaround in flagship cycling pursuit
21:50
Chris Wilson
For the second Olympics running, Great Britain’s men’s team pursuit finished a race in a less than optimum position.
But where Charlie Tanfield’s crash in Tokyo three years ago was a symbol of the struggles in what most see as British Cycling’s flagship event, this was a very different scenario.
When Ethan Hayter blew up with 300 metres to go in this Olympic final to end any hopes of overhauling to Australia to take gold, there was a tinge of disappointment.

Matt Hudson-Smith wins Olympic silver after agonising 400m finish in Paris
21:15
Chris Wilson
Matt Hudson-Smith claimed Olympic silver in a breathtaking 400m but it proved to be another agonising close miss in the Briton’s pursuit of gold on the world stage.
A storming run from Quincy Hall secured the gold for USA with the American coming home like a train as he charged down the final 100m to catch the Briton.
Hudson-Smith had held off Jereem Richards while coming off the bend, but Hall seized victory by just four-hundredths of a second in 43.40 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in history.

Matt Hudson-Smith spoke to the BBC shortly after taking his silver in the 400m final.
The 29-year-old says that “sometimes the journey is better than the outcome”, adding that it’s “been a hell of a journey and I’m grateful”.
“Olympic silver, not many can say that,” he adds.
“I saw my family, I didn’t even know they were here! Bit of a shocker really, I hate them watching me!
“It’s been a hell of a journey. We knew it would come down from the 50, he had another gear, I hit it a little bit too late. But this is just the start, my time is going to come.
“ I thought I’d cleared the field, I knew someone was going to come but I wasnt trying to ease up and he got me on the line. It happens.
“It’s been crazy, I’ve just got to keep building on it.”

Soufiane El Bakkali has taken gold in the 3000m steeplechase final, with a time of 8:05.06. Tokyo silver medal winner Lamecha Girma had been tussling for the lead, but fell over a hurdle and required lengthy treatment – he goes down as DNF.
Kenneth Rooks of the USA takes silver, with Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot getting bronze.

We’re still seeing some competition at the Stade de France, with the men’s discus and women’s pole vault finals still yet to be decided.
Jamaica’s Rojé Stona is leading the former, with a distance of 70m, while Australia’s Nina Kennedy is leading the pole vault competition having cleared 4.9m.
Olympics 2024: Men’s 400m final – MATT HUDSON-SMITH TAKES SILVER
20:32
Chris Wilson
He’ll eventually be proud of the silver medal of course, but it’s heartbreak for Matt Hudson-Smith. He must have been in the lead at 390, maybe even 395 metres!
He’s run a European record of 43.44s tonight.
There’s a smile on the face of the 29-year-old, and we’ve had a real showing of the pure emotion and desire of the Olympics there.

We’re underway in the 400m final! Can Matt Hudson-Smith take the first gold in this event for GB in a century?
Richards is in front early and around the bend, but Hudson-Smith blazes into the lead as they go down the straight!
The Brit briefly looks to be pulling away down the final 100m or so, but the USA’s Quincy Hall comes out of nowhere in one of the outside lanes! He overtakes the Brit with a handful of metres left!
Hudson-Smith takes silver, with Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga taking bronze.

Attention quickly turns to the men’s 400m final and Team GB’s main medal hope – Matthew Hudson-Smith.
The 29-year-old is the fastest man in the world over this distance in 2024, and he enters with high hopes of a medal – and perhaps even a gold.
Grenadian Kirani James is the only medallist remaining from Tokyo 2020 – he grabbed a bronze in Japan, having won gold in 2012.

Amber Anning ran 49.47s in that semi-final - only three athletes across the three semis were faster than her, the winner of each one. Bodes very well for the final itself, considering she eased off at the end once the top-two places were assured.
That’s a new personal best for Anning and a fine time to do so. Hopefully she can go one better next time out.
Meanwhile, Sada Williams finished with 49.89 so she and Norway’s Jaeger from SF1 will be through as best qualifiers - Lieke Klaver is out.

Third semi-final time and Amber Anning is Team GB’s final hope for the final - another bronze medallist from the mixed relay.
Anning makes a good start and so too does Paola Moran of Mexico, Polish runner Kaczmarek making ground but Anning is looking pretty handy as they round the bend - she needs a strong finish now, a three-runner race long with Sada Williams but she fades and it’s Anning and European champion Kaczmarek who surge away clear taking one and two - quickly reversed a moment later to put the Pole top, the Brit second.
Both relaxed in the final paces once they knew they were away from Williams, with just 0.02s between the top two in any case.
One Brit into the final!

Nielsen takes third - that’s confirmed, with 50.69s, 0.08s ahead of Pryce.
But unfortunately that’s not going to be enough to take her into the final, as both Klaver and third-placed Henriette Jaeger in the first semi-final posted better times than her. No finalist from two athletes for Team GB in the women’s 400m.
Olympics 2024: Women’s 400m semi-finals
20:01
Karl Matchett
Another false start! A few look up nervously at the board - Nielsen has the cameras on her. The Brit was part of the 4x400m mixed relay team which picked up a bronze in Paris on Saturday - and she receives a yellow card here. She puts hands to her forehead and refocuses herself.
Away properly this time, Paulino quickly into top spot and racing past Miklos, Nielsen in a good spot as they come around the bend but she’s behind Alexis Holmes of USA and fading, Holmes is going to take second....and Nielsen just came back in to take third!
Now it’ll be all about who has the best times from the third- or even fourth-placers.
Paulino was way out in front, Holmes second and currently Nickisha Pryce is listed third, we’ll see.

Second semi-final coming up very shortly, world No10 Laviai Nielsen will be in lane seven for GB.
She’ll be right next to the current world No1, though, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, silver medallist in this event in Tokyo and winner at the World Championships in Budapest last year, where she ran 48.76s.
Let’s see if GB can get a finalist here.

False start as a hand goes up ahead of the gun - the athletes set themselves up once more. Klaver picked up a yellow card for that, but she remains on the starting block.
This time we’re away properly - the Dutchwoman is slow away but Adeleke has made a great start, along with Salwa Eid Naser, and those two are miles out in front as we hit the straight, Klaver really struggling - she’s only going to finish fourth!
Klaver took gold in the mixed relay earlier on at Paris 2024 - there is very unlikely to be a repeat in the individual. She shakes her head in bemusement.
Ohuruogu finishes sixth and is out of the running. Ireland’s Adeleke finishes second behind Naser.

Victoria Ohuruogu made her way through to the semis via the repechage - no more second chances at this point though. We’re just a minute or two from the start of the first semi-final.
Lieke Klaver (Netherlands) and Rhasidat Adeleke (Ireland) are the big contenders in this first race, both ranked in the world’s top five.
Ohuruogu is ranked No14.

Coming up very shortly we’ve got the next batch of semi-finals: the women’s 400m.
Victoria Ohuruogu is in SF1, Laviai Nielsen in SF2 and Amber Anning in SF3, all of Team GB.
The latter has the best time of the season posted so far, 49.51s, but she faces a tough ask all the same to beat Kendall Ellis of USA. That said, it’s not about winning tonight’s race, just claiming a place in the final.
Top two go through in seach semi, then the two fastest finishers outside those automatic qualifiers.

He gets away cleanly and is almost in the lead around the bend, but Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo takes a lead and never relinquishes it, taking a time of 19.96s.
Lyles finishes in second in 20.08, with Makanakaishe Charamba in third on 20.31s. He’ll be in the final as it stands, with De Grasse looking unlikely to make it.

The Team GB squad spoke to BBC shortly after missing out on gold.
Hayter, who almost fell off his bike at the end, said that GB “were so close and I could see it”.
“It was nearly five laps at the end and I just really gave too much, and my whole body went weak and I really struggled to hold myself on the bike in the end.
“Sorry to the guys but I think we gave everything and we can be proud of that silver medal.
“We were super happy to win a silver medal but it was really there for the taking for us and we kind of knew that. We went out to get it but just came short in the end, so it’s a shame.”
Dan Bigham adds that GB “rode the fastest ride we have ever done on every ride”, and “literally we all gave it everything”.
““It was scrappy because you are on the limit. You are riding quicker than you have ever ridden before and as Ethan said we probably gave it that little bit too much. We are really leaning on him at the moment because he is anchoring the team and he has the legs to do it.
“At the end of the day Ethan is still human and it is on us to make sure we deliver him in that best place and we maybe gave him a bit too much work to do there.

Andy Macdonald is the last skater left to go in the final prelims round.
It’s his third and final run, what can he produce here?
He does the fakey 540, Tony Hawk is celebrating on the sidelines.
The crowd are all on their feet, he takes the yellow helmet off and punches the air, it’s his best score but a 77.66, it will put him in 18th place.
He looks happy with that. Only the top eight qualify for the Olympics and he is a long way off that.

Keely Hodgkinson has set her sights on World Championships gold after securing a first Olympic title in the women’s 800 metres final.
She snapped a streak of silvers that began with her Tokyo podium and extended through to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and back-to-back World Championships as she came home in front of Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma and Kenya’s Mary Moraa at Stade de France on Monday night.
She said: “It hasn’t completely sunk in yet, I feel like when I get my medal at the ceremony that will really be an emotional moment for me.
“I’m just over the moon that it all came together, you can work so hard sometimes and it all not be executed as well as you like it to be. I’m so happy I finally got my gold medal.
“Since the last Olympics I think it was always an aim by Paris to try to be in a position to try to upgrade that to gold. After so many silver medals on a global stage in my sport, this really meant the most and there’s no better place to upgrade it than the Olympics.
“I didn’t really know how the race was going to be run or how it was going to play out, you can never really know those things until you’re in the moment but I felt like I was in the best position however it was run and be hard to beat, we’ve worked hard for this and it’s a great moment.
“I still don’t have a World Championships gold, so there’s still plenty more to be done.”
