Kota Kinabalu: Omar Maya Amat cited his commitment to the National Football Development Programme (NFDP) in Sabah and as an instructor for Malaysian Football Association (FAM) as the reasons for his decision to quit as technical director of Sabah Football Association (Safa) in July.

The former State player issued a statement on Tuesday stating that he decided to make the clarification to avoid his resignation being made into an issue and to avoid inaccurate speculation.

“My decision to resign was due to the many responsibilities at NFDP and FAM. I have to pay more attention to NFDP with the expanding programme and a new training centre for girls under 12-year-old in addition to handling more than 10 competitions for each age group from seven to 17-year-old.

“Furthermore as a FAM certified instructor, I am given the responsibility to conduct football coaching courses throughout Sabah,” he said.

He also played a vital role in the cooperation between Safa and the National Sports Council and the Education Department for the development of football in addition to organising courses.

He hoped Safa will continue the programmes and organise more junior tournaments so that new talents can be identified and develop further.
