MANILA, Philippines — Ombudsman Jesus 'Crispin' Remulla said Friday Senators Alan Peter and Pia Cayetano “probably needed a break” after leaving the country while an obstruction of justice case against them awaits resolution.
“Probably, they probably need a break. I know that they have been under stress lately. And as Senator Ping Lacson said, I would follow the words of Senator Lacson,” Remulla said.
Remulla said he expects the couple to return and does not believe their departure will follow the same path as that of Senator Loren Legarda and her son, former lawmaker Leandro Leviste.
“I think they will return. Lani is still a mayor. Lani went with him. Yes. She’s a good wife; she accompanied her husband when he left, right? And I think they won’t leave their positions,” Remulla said.
The Ombudsman said the obstruction case against the Cayetanos has been submitted for resolution, but the office is still clarifying matters before making a decision.
“We want to make sure that our facts are right. We cannot be rash. This is serious work,” Remulla added.
