Ombudsman Remulla debunks reports he's next chief justice, says he's not applying

MANILA, Philippines — Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla on Thursday denied that he was applying to be the next chief justice of the Supreme Court.

Speaking to reporters at the Senate, Remulla said he has no more aspirations beyond finishing his current work.

"I'm not applying," Remulla said during a media interview.

He issued the statement following reports that he was a candidate for chief justice to replace Alexander Gesmundo, who will retire in November.

Remulla was appointed Ombudsman in October 2025 after serving as secretary of the Department of Justice. The Ombudsman has a fixed seven-year term.
