On Réunion Island, some landscapes seem as though they belong to another world. With its steep cliffs, tropical forests and volcanic terrain, the island is filled with remarkable natural wonders. Among them, Tremblet Beach stands out for its unusual appearance. Located in the commune of Saint-Philippe on the island’s south-eastern coast, this beach captivates visitors with its striking black sand and surroundings moulded by volcanic activity. A beach born from the meeting of lava and the ocean
Tremblet Beach lies south of the headland of the same name, in a region renowned for its wild and unspoilt scenery. Stretching for around 280 metres, it is immediately recognisable thanks to the dark colour of its sand, a direct result of its volcanic origins.
Before 2007, the coastline looked very different. The shore was largely rocky and lacked any true beach. Everything changed during an eruption of Piton de la Fournaise, Réunion’s iconic volcano.
That year, a major lava flow descended the volcano’s slopes before reaching the Indian Ocean. On contact with the water, the volcanic material gradually fragmented and accumulated along the shoreline. This natural process gave rise to a new expanse of black sand, creating what is now Tremblet Beach.
A spectacular volcanic setting that has become iconic
Today, Tremblet Beach is admired for its raw, mineral beauty. It is one of the most striking landscapes on Réunion Island. The contrast between the black sand, lush tropical vegetation and the deep blue waters of the ocean creates a particularly spectacular panorama.
Unlike the white-sand beaches often associated with tropical islands, this beach possesses a unique identity. Its appearance is a direct testament to the power of the geological forces that continue to shape the island.
The beach is also known for its preserved and unspoilt character. Less frequented than many of Réunion’s other seaside destinations, it offers the opportunity to experience a relatively untouched natural environment.
The site attracts both local residents and visitors eager to discover the traces left behind by the activity of Piton de la Fournaise. Several ancient lava flows remain visible nearby, bearing witness to the power of the volcano, which is considered one of the most active on Earth. This close proximity to the volcano gives the site its distinctive character and serves as a reminder that the island is still evolving under the influence of geological forces.
More than simply a place to swim, Tremblet Beach has become a symbol of nature’s ability to reinvent itself. Born from a volcanic eruption less than twenty years ago, it is one of the most spectacular examples of how Réunion’s landscapes continue to be shaped by fire and the sea.
