A man suffered a serious head injury during violent clashes between fans and police outside the stadium before the Turin derby on Sunday.

The 36-year-old was apparently hit by a bottle. The Juventus fan had to undergo surgery in a Turin hospital and was in intensive care in critical condition. According to initial reports, four police officers were also injured.

The local derby was delayed due to the clashes. The two Turin teams finally took to the pitch about an hour late. The match between Torino and Juventus ended in a 2-2 draw. The draw on the last weekend of Serie A means Juve will miss out on Champions League qualification.

Instead, Como, coached by Cesc Fàbregas, sensationally qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their 119-year history after a 4-1 victory over Cremonese. Just seven years ago, the club was still playing in Italy's fourth division.
