KOTA KINABALU: A one-month traffic study has been launched to tackle worsening congestion around Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), one of the state’s busiest medical facilities.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joachim Gunsalam said proposals include constructing or redesigning roads and possibly introducing a one-way system, though existing developments and outdated traffic plans complicate solutions.
Works and Utilities minister, Joachim, stressed that coordination between the Public Works Department, Ministry of Health, and state authorities is crucial, with federal budget approvals needed for implementation. The hospital, serving as a key referral centre for Sabah, Labuan, and parts of Sarawak, will also see a new 400-bed building within its compound, offering inpatient, outpatient, emergency, specialist, and surgical services.
He noted the expansion is part of the 12th Malaysia Plan and will continue under the 13th Plan.
On water supply, he advised the public to conserve water amid uncertain rainfall, while Sebatik Island continues relying on boreholes due to limited catchment areas.
