HEALTH and well-being provider OneCare Group has intensified its support for seafarers caught in the escalating geopolitical crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime transit remains severely disrupted.
In a statement released Monday, the group announced it is working closely with global shipping companies to mitigate the psychological and operational strain on crews who have been effectively immobilized since February.
The ongoing maritime standoff, characterized by heightened security threats and regional tensions, has forced many seafarers into extended tours of duty. Crew members face restricted movement and mounting anxiety regarding their personal safety and the welfare of their families at home.
Prolonged isolation
Marinos Kokkinis, chief executive officer of OneCare Group, emphasized that the situation has evolved from a short-term disruption into a period of prolonged isolation.
“What we are seeing now is a situation where crews are effectively isolated at sea under heightened threat conditions. This significantly increases both physical risk exposure and mental fatigue,” Kokkinis said. “Our role is to ensure that no seafarer feels unsupported during this period.”
In response to the crisis, OneCare has bolstered its 24/7 telemedical assistance and structured well-being monitoring for those remaining on board beyond their original contract durations.
Mental health intervention
Through its member company, Mental Health Support Solutions (MHSS), the group has increased proactive well-being check-ins and provided immediate access to confidential counseling for those experiencing stress and exhaustion.
Mariana Charalambous, managing director of MHSS, noted that clinical oversight is already in place for seafarers identified with elevated stress levels directly linked to the war situation.
“Extended periods at sea under uncertainty can have a cumulative psychological impact,” Charalambous said. “Early intervention and continuous access to professional support are essential to safeguarding long-term mental health.”
The group is also providing dedicated support pathways for repatriated crew members to ensure continuity of care after they disembark.
OneCare Group further stated it is collaborating with shipowners, operators, and insurers to maintain clear communication with vessels, aiming to reduce uncertainty and reinforce trust during the high-risk transit.
Headquartered globally, OneCare Group provides a comprehensive health platform for the maritime industry, including medical advisory, nutrition consulting, and mental health support for the international seafaring community.
