Oscar Onley has been ruled out of the Tour de France with the shoulder injury he suffered in a crash earlier this month.

The 23-year-old Scot crashed heavily on stage six of the Tour Auvergne Rhone-Alpes two weeks ago, and the scale of his injuries mean he will not be on the start-line when this summer’s Tour gets under way in Barcelona on July 4.

“I’m gutted not to be able to line up for the Tour de France this year,” said Onley, who finished fourth overall in last year’s Tour to earn a big-money move to Netcompany INEOS.

“My focus is now on recovering and getting my shoulder in a good place, but I’m really motivated to try and make something out of this season.”

Onley’s absence could see the team line up behind Kevin Vauquelin, although the 25-year-old – seventh overall in last year’s Tour – has been forced to sit out this weekend’s French championships through illness.
