
Kota Kinabalu: A 29-year-old man was fined RM1,000 or a month’s jail by the Magistrate Court, Wednesday, for engaging in online gambling activity.
Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie meted out the sentence to Eddie Ericson Inson after he admitted to online gambling on his handphone at 9.22pm, at Jalan Sireh, Tanjung Aru on Sept 23.
Eddie was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming House Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months’ jail, or both, on conviction.
Unrepresented, Eddie requested for a light sentence as both his parents are unemployed and has two younger siblings who are still in school.

Read more According to Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit, police during Op Dadu, found Eddie involved in online gambling.
Suzie said police inspected the handphone and discovered that it was used for topping up service via the calculator app by entering the password ‘8888’, which subsequently led to an E-pay app.
The handphone was seized and Eddie was arrested. The seized money was ordered forfeited.
In the same court, a 50-year old man was jailed 20 month for taking drugs.
Cyril Golokin pleaded guilty under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which provides a fine up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail, on conviction.
The court ordered Cyril to serve the sentence from the date of arrest on June 1.
Suzie said Cyril was tested positive for syabu at 11.10pm in Penampang during a check.
Duty Counsel, Carmen Khoo requested for a lighter sentence as Cyril is a sub-contractor and had to take care of his mother who is 90.
Carmen also said Cyril had three previous convictions.
The court ordered Cyril to undergo police supervision for two years upon his release.
