KUALA LUMPUR - A special committee will be established to provide more details on the enforcement of a proposal that requires parents to oversee their children's online activities, as part of the Online Safety Act, according to Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
This special committee will be called - The Online Safety Committee.
The Communications Minister said that an important aspect of implementing this legislation is the creation of the Online Safety Committee, which falls under the purview of Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform).
“The Online Safety Committee is essential. It will play a central role in defining what is considered ‘online harm’ and in guiding how such issues should be handled under the new legislation.
"As such, we need to allow the process to take its course. We will proceed once everything is finalised," he said during a post-Cabinet meeting press conference earlier today.
On June 2, Azalina said that the government was currently reviewing several existing legal provisions to introduce clearer responsibilities for parents and guardians in efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect.
The proposal also includes mandatory participation in digital safety education programmes. - June 5, 2025
