TAWAU: The Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) announced the opening of its online Business License Renewal Service and Community Engagement Programme on Sunday.

Both programmes were launched by the Deputy Chief Minister II cum Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam at the MPT Conference Hall.

He said the services would allow traders to renew their business licenses, operating licenses and hawker licenses online.

“This is among services provided for in the MPT’s E-services application.

Dr. Joachim said that the service benefits in offering improved Local Authority services to the community and increasing the degree of information technology literacy among the local community.

In addition, he said that because there is no need for face-to-face interaction, this method is speedier, can improve economic activity, and reduces the risk of health outbreaks.

Customers, he says, can still come to the counter if they have an issue renewing their licence.

He noted that 5,000 licences have been renewed online so far, which is one of the strategic objectives listed in the Ministry’s Action Plan Component, which is part of the Ministry’s 2021-2025 Strategic Plan.

He is also pleased to learn that the Tawau community, particularly the general public who frequently deal with the MPT, welcomed the online licence renewal method because it saves them the trouble of physically being present and standing in long lines at the counter as was previously required.

On the Community Engagement Programme, Dr. Joachim said the programme aims to bridge the gap between Tawau’s customers/community and the Local Authority by reaching out to the community to listen to current issues and give MPT service information.

He said the Ministry will continuously collaborate and oversee whatever programmes and activities are undertaken by each Local Authority, and he hopes that the MPT’s work quality will be greater than previously.

Also present, Sebatik Assemblyman, Datuk Hassan Awang Gani Pg Amir and MPT President, Joseph Pang.
