Kota Kinabalu: Only qualified and experienced coaches will be engaged by Sabah Football Association (Safa) to coach at their football academy.

Academy director Azman Mastar said these coaches’ role in the academy will be determined by Safa’s technical director Omar Maya Amat.

“The academy will involve trainees under the age of 12, 14 and 16, so it is important for us to have qualified and experienced coaches with a well planned programme to develop them to become players of the future,” he said after chairing a meeting at Safa office on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the launching ceremony of the first football academy in the State is scheduled to be held at Safa’s training ground here in Likas on March 11.

It will be officiated by Deputy Chief Minister III cum Public Works Minister Datuk Shahelmy Yahya.

Azman, who is also Safa’s assistant secretary general, added that the next academy to be launched will be in Keningau.

He also urged other Safa affiliates to prepare in setting up their own academy in their respective districts.
