Today's Op Ed discusses two demotions, two different worlds, yet strikingly similar lessons to be learned by all.
Ammar Abd Ghapar, the Tourism Malaysia director-general, was demoted to deputy director-general for failing to live up to expectations, according to the tourism minister.
On the other side of the world, Hakuho Sho, a sumo legend, faced demotion in the sport's governing body due to the violent behaviour of his protege.
In the case of Ammar, his demotion highlights the harsh reality of leadership: qualifications alone do not guarantee success. Despite holding a PhD. in tourism, his execution of duties fell short. It is a stark reminder that leadership isn't just about titles or credentials; it's about the ability to deliver results and lead by example.
Hakuho's situation, while different in context, underscores another crucial aspect of leadership: responsibility. As a stablemaster, he was accountable for his protege's actions. The fact that he failed to correct his protege's behaviour reflects poorly on his leadership qualities.
It is a reminder that leaders are not only responsible for their own actions but also for the actions of those under their guidance.
Both cases serve as cautionary tales for leaders in any field. Qualifications and positions are not enough; performance and accountability matter.
Leaders must constantly strive to improve, lead by example, and take responsibility for the actions of those under their care.
Failure to do so can lead to grave consequences, including demotions, tarnished reputations, and, most importantly, missed opportunities to make a positive impact in their respective careers In the society within which they reside.
