OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience for users under 18 that trims back the chatbot’s more companion-like habits and leans harder into being a study tool. It started rolling out globally on 18 August across both free and paid personal plans, though availability may vary by region.
The thinking is to stop teens forming an attachment to the bot and to point them back towards real-world relationships instead, which comes after growing worry about young people treating AI as a confidant. OpenAI framed its goal as wanting to “treat teens like teens,” striking a balance between being overly restrictive and exposing them to content that may not be appropriate for their age.
Alongside these safeguards, the teen version also limits exposure to higher-risk topics such as self-harm, eating disorders, violence, dangerous activities and explicit content. The idea is to create a safer experience for younger users while reducing their exposure to potentially harmful conversations.
At the same time, OpenAI is placing a stronger focus on learning. ChatGPT for Teens uses Study Mode to guide students through problems step by step instead of simply giving them the answer, while homework reminders can recognise when a teen may be trying to shortcut an assignment and encourage them to work through it properly. Other features include quizzes, learning visualisations, break reminders, and Study Hours or Quiet Hours that can restrict access to ChatGPT at certain times.
Teens don’t need to enable any of this themselves. If account details, a verified age or OpenAI’s age prediction suggest someone is under 18, they’re placed into the teen version automatically, and it defaults to the safer setting whenever it isn’t sure. Adults wrongly caught by that can verify their age through a tool called Persona. Parents, meanwhile, can link their account to a teen’s to manage some settings and receive safety notifications.
ChatGPT for Teens arrives at a time when AI companies are facing growing scrutiny over how chatbots interact with younger users. This includes lawsuits over teen safety, a US regulatory investigation into AI companions, and criticism that stronger safeguards are only being introduced after ChatGPT had already grown to hundreds of millions of weekly users.
For Malaysian parents and teens, the feature is being rolled out globally across both free and paid plans, so it should reach local accounts in the coming weeks. Once available, parents may want to check the settings and parental controls to see what options are available.
