Whenever I come across something a PKR leader says, it reminds me why one should not engage with fools for too long.
When you first interact with fools, you immediately realise that they are fools.
But when you keep interacting with fools, the fools stop appearing to you as fools.
And when fools no longer appear to you as fools, it does not mean that they have become wise. It simply means that you have become one of them.
I doubt PKR leaders were not once intelligent people. But there must be something in PKR that causes them to lose much of that intelligence the longer they remain in the party. And I suspect one of those things might be the company they keep.
The latest PKR leader making me question the quality of PKR's leadership is its vice-president, Dr Zaliha Mustafa, who recently said she was puzzled by Johor Barisan Nasional chairman Onn Hafiz Ghazi's demand for Pakatan Harapan to name its poster boy for the upcoming state election.
According to Zaliha, Onn's position is contradictory.
On one hand, he says voters have the right to know who PH's Menteri Besar candidate is. On the other hand, he admits there is no guarantee that the poster boy will eventually be appointed to the post.
"So which is it?" Zaliha asked.
"If the appointment of the Menteri Besar is subject to the procedures and provisions stipulated in Johor's constitution, why the need to turn this issue into a polemic?" she added in a Facebook post.
If any of you are having trouble understanding what Zaliha is trying to say, trust me, you are not alone.
I do not know what the "Doctor" in front of Zaliha's name stands for, but if it signifies that she possesses a PhD, it does not speak particularly well for people who possess doctorates.
I am not even going to attempt to elaborate on what Zaliha could possibly mean with her statement. I am simply going to dismiss it outright as pointless.
I do not even know the full inside story of Johor politics, yet I can understand perfectly well what Onn Hafiz is trying to hint at.
He is suggesting to voters that the reason PH has not named its poster boy or Menteri Besar candidate is because the individual PH wants may not receive the approval of the Johor Palace.
In other words, he is implying that PH's Johor team is riddled with internal problems, and he is using that suggestion to discourage voters from entrusting the state to such a team.
When Onn said that, you would expect that Zaliha would say something that will assure voters otherwise.
Unfortunately, rather than convincing voters that Onn is wrong, all Zaliha's muddled response has done is reinforce Onn's suggestion.
Her statement seems to confirm the impression that Team PH may not only be burdened by the problem of having no clear poster boy or Menteri Besar candidate, but may also be weighed down at the highest levels by a leadership that appears lost, confused, and incapable of understanding even the simplest political messaging.
