In the aftermath of the recently concluded state elections, an allocation of eight portfolios to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor raises valid and serious concerns for the rakyat and his partners in PN, namely Bersatu.
While it's important for leaders to manage responsibilities effectively, holding such an array of portfolios might strain his ability to provide focused attention to each area.
On the other hand, Perikatan Nasional (PN) linchpin Bersatu has only three assemblymen in the new Kedah exco line-up, compared to five in the previous term.
Sanusi ought to remember that his Bersatu partners have 10 representatives in the Dewan Undangan Negri and should be amply rewarded with more posts in the Exco.
The motive behind this decision could be multifaceted; it may stem from Sanusi's own desire to maintain control over crucial matters or from a perceived necessity to safeguard power. For example, the need to focus on hasil bumi, in light of recent pressure over rare earth resources, is understandable. But by sidelining his major partner, he might create unnecessary rifts within the ranks.
However, it's worth questioning whether this is driven by genuine concern for the state's progress or if it leans towards the accumulation of power and influence.
As leaders, transparency in decision-making and prioritizing the welfare of the state should be at the forefront, ensuring that the people's interests are upheld above all else.
Sanusi has yet to explain his rationale for his eight portfolios and sidelining Bersatu with only three on the Exco.
No matter what rationale he might offer, eight portfolios for any MB are far too broad, a span of control, even in a small state like Kedah. There are only eight working hours in a day. Does he plan to spend just one hour a day on each portfolio?
So, what's the story, Sanusi?
Or as they often say in Kedah lingo, “Apa cerita ni, Sanusi?”
